Review: ‘Runt’

Is A Final Cameron Boyce Masterpiece Film Full Of Dark Turns And True Mental Anguish

Runt tells the story of a group of neglected and misguided high-school seniors who are pulled into a downward cycle of violence when the adults in their lives fail them. Cameron Boyce portrays Cal, a high-school teenager, who after a troubling incident takes a stand that results in devastating consequences. This indie and psychological thriller stars Boyce, the star of Disney Channel’s Descendants franchise, Jessie, HBO’s Mrs. Fletcher, and the Grown Ups movies just to name a few. Alongside Boyce co-stars Nicole Elizabeth Berger (Clover), Aramis Knight (Into The Badlands), Brianna Hildebrand (Deadpool 1 & 2), Cyrus Arnold (Run Hide Fight), Jason Patric (The Vanished), Charlie Gillespie (Julie and The Phantoms) and Tichina Arnold (The Last Black Man in San Francisco). The film marks the directorial debut of William Coakley, based on a script by Coakley, Christian Van Gregg, and Armand Constantine.

In Runt, Cal (the late Cameron Boyce) is an innocent and smart kid of a single parent who looks after a stray dog he’s taken in. He has a long time crush on popular girl, Gabriella (Hildebrand) but is too shy to confront her about his feelings. Her boyfriend, D-Rat Ronnie  is a highly protected football player and a well-known bully. When D-Rat Ronnie finds out that Cal has a crush on Gabriella, he and his football friends start harassing and abusing Cal at school. At first, Cal tries to ignore the bullying and avoids telling any adult for fear of making matters worse. Then, when the bullies confront Cal at a party, shove him in the trunk of a car, and sexually assault his friend Cecily (Nicole Elizabeth Berger) Cal decides to retaliate. The torment escalates when Cal and the bullies proceed to engage in a series of one-upping, with each form of retaliation growing darker and more violent than the last.

Runt is a beautiful final masterpiece from Cameron Boyce. A psychological thriller full of dark turns and true mental anguish. This young and brilliant cast portray their characters wonderfully as they give believable insight to their world of showing how they fend for themselves. The adults in Cal’s and the other student’s lives, including parents and teachers, are either absent or terrible role-models. This leads to bad behavior and choices that spiral into intense, deadly, and all too real reactions and situations. Youth, innocence dramatically slip away as these teenagers take matters into their own hands and fight their way through some real life drama and shitty scenarios. Boyce is an absolute pleasure to watch. It’s crystal clear that he poured his heart and soul into a film and character for a belief he felt so strongly about. He truly is an incredible talent that will be missed. Runt is a must film see for sure!

Runt opens in select theaters October 1st and VOD/Digital on October 19th.

‘Prophet’: Jake Gyllenhaal Teaming With ‘Extraction’ Director For Adaptation Of Super-Soldier Comic

Jake Gyllenhaal isn’t done with the world of superhero movies, and no, he’s not putting on the toilet bowl helmet of Mysterio once again…that we know of. Instead, Gyllenhaal will team with red-hot Extraction director Sam Hargrave for Prophet, based on the once-popular comic book from Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld.

THR has the details, reporting that Gyllenhaal will star in Prophet with Hargrave directing. The script is from Arrow writer Marc Guggenheim, also a well-known comic book writer in his own right.

First appearing in the pages of Youngblood back in 1992, Prophet is basically Captain America to the EXTREME!!!! Born John Prophet, he was a homeless man during WWII who agreed to take part in a German super-soldier program led by a scientist from the future. Transformed into a weapon of war, Prophet was cryogenically frozen so as to be awakened for a mission in the far-flung future, but is instead woken prematurely in a time he doesn’t recognize.

A movie based on Propet has been in the works for a few years. He is another in a long line of Liefeld creations that got better, and became more popular, after he was done with them.

Gyllenhaal can be seen right now in Antoine Fuqua’s thriller The Guilty. He recently signed up for another graphic novel adaptation, Oblivion Song, from The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman.  He also has Michael Bay’s film Ambulance arriving next February.

‘Blade Runner: Black Lotus’ Trailer Reveals A Special Replicant With A Deadly Set Of Skills

Yesterday at New York Comic-Con, Crunchyroll and Adult Swim revealed a new trailer for anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus. At the same time, they also announced the show will debut on November  13th.

The series is set in 2032, so it predates Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner: 2049, and centers on a special replicant named Elle, voiced by Iron Fist and The Matrix: Resurrections actress Jessica Henwick. In the neon-lit footage, we see that Elle has a very special purpose and a deadly set of skills. We also get to hear Brian Cox as Niander Wallace Sr., father of Jared Leto’s character Niander Wallace Jr. in Blade Runner 2049. That character will be voiced by Wes Bentley here. Also in the voice cast are Will Yun Lee, Samira Wiley, Peyton List, Barkhad Abdi, Josh Duhamel, Stephen Root, and Henry Czerny.

Here’s the synopsis: “Los Angeles 2032. A young woman wakes up with no memories, and possessing deadly skills. The only clues to her mystery are a locked data device and a tattoo of a black lotus. Putting together the pieces, she must hunt down the people responsible for her brutal and bloody past to find the truth of her lost identity.”

Blade Runner: Black Lotus runs for 13-episodes with direction from Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) and Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex). Legendary Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo director Shinichiro Watanabe is on board as a producer.

Jamie Clayton Is A Very Different Pinhead In Hulu’s New ‘Hellraiser’ Film

Pinhead is back, and not all as you remember! It’s been about a year since we learned of Hellraiser‘s return courtesy of Hulu, director David Bruckner  (The Night House) and Blade writer David Goyer. You can’t have Hellraiser without Pinhead, and now we know the iconic character will be played by Sense8‘s Jamie Clayton.

That’s right, Pinhead will be altogether different in this new version of Hellraiser. The full cast surrounding Clayton was revealed to include Brandon Flynn, Goran Visnjic, Drew Starkey, Adam Faison, Aoife Hinds, and Hiam Abbass.

Perhaps most importantly to fans of the franchise, horror legend Clive Barker has joined the team as exec-producer. As creator of Hellraiser nobody knows this twisted world better. and he must have signed off on the gender-swapping of Pinhead.

Barker added, “Having seen some of the designs from David Bruckner’s new ‘Hellraiser’ film, they pay homage to what the first film created, but then take it to places it’s never been before. This is a ‘Hellraiser’ on a scale that I simply didn’t expect. David and his team are steeped in the story’s mythology, but what excites me is their desire to honor the original even as they revolutionize it for a new generation.”

Hellraiser is expected to drop on Hulu sometime in 2022 since shooting is already completed.

‘The 355’ Trailer: Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o, & Penelope Cruz Are Spies On A Top Secret Mission

Hard to believe it has been a full year since we had a trailer for spy thriller The 355, a film that boasts an incredible lineup of women we want to see kick some ass. Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain is joined by Oscar winners Lupita Nyong’o and Penelope Cruz, along with Diane Kruger and Fan Bingbing in a story of female spies brought together to save the world.

The new footage reveals a ton of globe-trotting action, plus dude co-stars Sebastian Stan and Edgar Ramirez, so this movie is full of heavy hitters. Behind the camera is Simon Kinberg, the X-Men franchise vet who previously worked with Chastain on Dark Phoenix. He also co-wrote the script with Theresa Rebeck, known for her work on NBC’s Smash.

Here’s the synopsis: When a top-secret weapon falls into mercenary hands, wild card CIA agent Mason “Mace” Brown (Oscar®-nominated actress Jessica Chastain) will need to join forces with rival badass German agent Marie (Diane Kruger, In the Fade), former MI6 ally and cutting-edge computer specialist Khadijah (Oscar® winner Lupita Nyong’o), and skilled Colombian psychologist Graciela (Oscar® winner Penélope Cruz) on a lethal, breakneck mission to retrieve it, while also staying one step ahead of a mysterious woman, Lin Mi Sheng (Bingbing Fan, X-Men: Days of Future Past), who is tracking their every move. As the action rockets around the globe from the cafes of Paris to the markets of Morocco to the opulent auction houses of Shanghai, the quartet of women will forge a tenuous loyalty that could protect the world—or get them killed. The film also stars Édgar Ramirez (The Girl on the Train) and Sebastian Stan (Avengers: Endgame).

The 355 opens on January 7th 2022.

‘The Afterparty’ Teaser: Tiffany Haddish Has A Mystery To Solve In Apple’s Star-Studded Comedy Whodunnit

Following the success of Knives Out, everybody is looking to do their own star-studded whodunnit. Now that the sequels are headed over to Netflix, other streamers are looking to get in on the mystery fun. But the only one, at least in my eyes, that has a chance of matching what Johnson accomplished is The Afterparty, an Apple series created by Chris Miller, half of the Lord & Miller duo, and featuring an incredible cast of funny people.

Just check this out: Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, Zoë Chao, Ben Schwartz, Ike Barinholtz, Ilana Glazer, Dave Franco, Jamie Demetriou, and John Early star in the murder-mystery set at a high school reunion afterparty. The series will take a Roshomon-style approach so that we see what’s up from multiple perspectives.

That cast along is worth the price of an Apple TV+ subscription.  Miller created, wrote, and directed all eight episodes. His partner Phil Lord is on board as an exec-producer. The duo are known primarily for their Jump Street films, as well as Into the Spider-verse. They’ve never really steered us wrong, have they?

The Afterparty hits AppleTV+ in January 2022.

The Afterparty is a murder-mystery comedy set at a high school reunion afterparty. Each of the eight episodes will feature a retelling of the same night told through a different character’s perspective, each with its own unique visual format and film genre to match the teller’s personality.

‘Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City’ Trailer Delivers The Classic Zombie Action Die-Hard Fans Have Been Hoping For

Despite lasting for six hit movies, Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jojovich’s Resident Evil franchise still took a lot of heat from fans of the Capcom video games for being unfaithful to the source material. Well, things are going to change with the reboot, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which is going to have all of the undead goodness that has made Resident Evil one of the biggest influences in zombie horror.

The new trailer is everything die-hard fans could hope for, as director Johannes Roberts is clearly looking to bring the games to the big screen as faithfully as possible. You get the most popular characters such as Jill Valentine, played by Hannah John-Kamen, rookie cop Leon S. Kennedy played by Avan Jogia, Kaya Scodelario and Robbie Amell as Claire and Chris Redfield, and top baddie Albert Wesker, whose massive frame is perfectly suited to Umbrella Academy actor Tom Hopper.

Not only that, but Roberts is taking scenes directly from the classic games. If you wanted to see Raccoon City police department get overrun on the big screen, this is what you’re looking for.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City opens on November 24th.

Returning to the origins of the massively popular RESIDENT EVIL franchise, fan and filmmaker Johannes Roberts brings the games to life for a whole new generation of fans. In RESIDENT EVIL: WELCOME TO RACCOON CITY, once the booming home of pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corporation, Raccoon City is now a dying Midwestern town. The company’s exodus left the city a wasteland…with great evil brewing below the surface. When that evil is unleashed, a group of survivors must work together to uncover the truth behind Umbrella and make it through the night.

‘Dune’ Final Trailer: Timothee Chalamet Is Destined For Greatness In Denis Villeneuve’s Sci-Fi Epic

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune hasn’t opened stateside yet, but already it’s killing it overseas with over $100M earned. That bodes well for the sci-fi epic which the filmmaker hopes will lead to sequels, since the first movie roughly covers half of Frank Herbert’s novel. There’s already a spinoff on the way, Dune: The Sisterhood, exclusive to HBO Max. But it ALL depends on the movie’s overall success, which is why you’re getting one more trailer before it opens.

You already know the deal at this point. The cast is incredible and includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, Chang Chen, David Dastmalchian, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Mamoa, and Javier Bardem.

If you’re like me and not at all into Dune, this trailer probably won’t do much to convince you. However, it’s tough to deny the cast and Villeneuve’s talent as a director. If anybody can make us forget the terrible, inexplicable cult favorite 1984 film, it’s Villeneuve.

Here’s the synopsis: A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence–a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential–only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

Dune opens in theaters and HBO Max on October 22nd.

‘Wandavision’ Spinoff In The Works With Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness

If anybody from WandaVision was going to emerge as the breakout character we should’ve known. It would be Agatha all along!

Variety has learned a Wandavision spinoff is in the works for Disney+,  featuring Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness, who posed as wacky neighbor Agnes for most of the series. She was eventually revealed to be Agatha, a powerful dark Witch who wants Wanda’s gifts for herself. As the show closed she was trapped in Westview.  Presumably the new show will begin there.

WandaVision writer Jac Schaeffer will return to write and exec-produce.

Review: ‘Lamb’

Strangely Heartfelt, Deeply Unusual Horror Sneaks Up On You Like A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing

The best thing you can do is go into Lamb as free of spoilers as possible. Although the trailer teases the absurd, provocative premise expertly, it’s still best to in completely unguarded so as to take the full brunt of A24’s latest folklore-esque thriller, which is almost sure to become a cult classic. The question is: with who? While there is definitely a sobering character study of lonely, grief-stricken outsiders, what the film will inevitably be remembered for is its freakish central character, even though that character never utters a word.

A rolling fog and the thud of a hulking boogeyman’s footsteps set Lamb as just another moody, atmospheric horror from the folks at A24, who have made these films a successful part of their stable. But it’s all just a clever ruse. Noomi Rapace and Hilmir Snær Guõnason star as Maria and Ingvar, an isolated Norwegian married couple working their farm in quiet despair. They tend the soil and feed the animals, mostly sheep, joined by their loyal canine, Dog. There isn’t much conversation that goes beyond their work, but we sense a great pit of regret when he brings up a newspaper article about the existence of time travel. He talks about the possibility of going into the future. She suggests going back into the past must also be possible. The unspoken question “Would you go back and change anything if you could?” hangs in the air. When one of their sheep gives birth to a lamb that is…well, let’s just say it’s not like the others, Maria and Ingvar see this as a sign. They take the baby in and care for it as their own, helping them overcome grief from a past tragedy. If only it were so simple.

Despite the portentous, solemn mood and ominous tidings, you’ll be tempted to laugh at the first sight of the lamb. And each time you see it, which director and co-writer Valdimar Johannsson) keeps sparse initially, you’ll be reminded how absurd this entire thing is despite the serious tone. And it’s clear Johannsson is exploring the reaches those in anguish will go to find happiness by presenting it in what is essentially a really dark fable. It’s compelling stuff, mainly because of how accustomed you find yourself getting to the lamb, at much the same rate the people within the film begin to see it as one of their own.

Things change dramatically with the arrival of Ingvar’s brother, Pétur (Björn Hlynur Haraldsson), almost like a deliberate attempt to further subvert our expectations. He comes in basically as the audience surrogate after we’ve started to see the lamb as normal, only to bring a “The fuck is this shit?” attitude that jolts us back to reality. Twisted humor follows with him, but also so does a reminder that this isn’t going to end well for anybody. Johannsson reintroduces the grim tidings with a cold stillness that we had almost forgotten about under cover of the lovely weirdness brought on by the lamb’s presence. By the end, when Lamb takes its inevitably dark turn you’ll be shocked at how effectively you were lulled into thinking this strange oasis of happiness could last. It sneaks up on you, like a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Lamb opens in theaters on October 8th.
