Review: ‘Cliff Walkers’

Zhang Yimou's First Spy Thriller Is A Chilly, High-Wire Act Too Exciting To Pass Up

Zhang Yimou will perhaps always be known for his colorful wuxia martial arts films, such as House of Flying DaggersHero, and 2018’s double-identity film Shadow. It’s that last one which most-closely informs Yimou’s first foray into the spy genre, Cliff Walkers, an elegantly-told, handomely-made historical drama of impossibly-high tension that is only cooled by the icy setting and convoluted story.

Cliff Walkers is a tale of double-crosses, betrayals, and a suicide mission in 1930s Manchukuo, a puppet state formed by Japan after their invasion of Manchuria. It’s here that four Communist spies trained in Russia; married couple Zhang (Zhang Yi) and Yu (Qin Hailu), and young lovers Chuliang (Zhu Yawen) and Lan (Liu Haocun); parachute down into the dark, snowy forests, Yimou painting this picture of the danger and artistry of the scene. Their task is to rescue a hostage who can expose war crimes committed by the Japanese, so it can be revealed to the rest of the world.

A brief, terse order to split up leads to some tense goodbyes, but also clues us in to the likelihood any of them will survive this particular gambit. Even worse, as all of this is happening the Japanese have learned, through torture of an intended handler, of the plan’s existence. They are ready for the spies, which leads to chaos as they must figure who can be trusted, while the Japanese agents are right on their tails.

While the story is set in Manchuria, the mode of dress, all long black coats and black fedoras, gives the feeling of a Chicago-style gangster film. Unfortunately, it also makes characters tough to distinguish, which is already hard because of so many criss-crossing agendas and twisting subplots. None of the Communists are particularly well-distinguished in the beginning, either. That does change over time, however, with Lan a standout for her awestruck innocence that gives way to surprising lethality when called upon. The other character to get a bit more to do than others is Zhou (Yu Hewei), a double agent whose neck is seemingly always on the chopping block. Yu is fantastic here, his personality shifting from one moment to the next. It’s the kind of slippery performance you want to see in a spy movie and that every good one has.

Yimou keeps the action brisk and the stakes high. Even if you can’t keep up with what’s going on, the film is so stunning to look at and the tension so elevated it doesn’t really matter. It’s surprisingly violent, too, with brutal tortures, executions by firing squad, and more than one shootout piling up the body count. There’s also one very good car chase sequence, with Yimou’s camera weaving between the vehicles as they slip and slide across the frozen streets. It shows Yimou doesn’t need rainbow colors and flying swordsmen to dazzle his viewers. And fortunately, since this film is ultimately a tribute to the men and women of the Communist revolution, the government won’t feel the need to censor it as they’ve done so many of his other works and it will release in both the U.S. and China on the same day. True to its title, Cliff Walkers walks a fine line of being too distant and messy, but Yimou pulls a high-wire act too exciting to pass up.

‘Transformers’: Dominique Fishback Joins Anthony Ramos In Paramount’s Next Movie

It’s been clear for a while now that Paramount and Hasbro were going in a different direction to Michael Bay’s Transformers movies. It began with the fun, nostalgic Bumblebee, and it continues in the films that are coming up. The next one to be directed by Creed II‘s Steven Caple Jr. already has In the Heights actor Anthony Ramos set to star, and now Deadline reports he’ll be joined by Judas and the Black Messiah star Dominique Fishback.

Fishback beat out other actresses, including If Beale Street Could Talk‘s Kiki Layne, to star alongside Ramos, a longtime friend. As for details on her character, that we don’t have, nor any info on what the story this time around will be. Some rumors have it focusing on Optimus Prime and a battle in Cybertron, but nothing is confirmed.

Joby Harold wrote the screenplay, chosen after two parallel scripts were put in motion.

This continues quite a hot streak for Fishback. Along with the acclaimed Judas and the Black Messiah which saw her co-star Daniel Kaluuya win an Oscar, she also signed on to join Samuel L. Jackson in Apple series The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey.

The next Transformers movie arrives on June 24th 2022.  Multiple other projects are in the works, including an animated movie and a film by Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto.

The Trailer For Dexter’s Showtime Revival Underscores How The Famous Killer Is ‘Misunderstood’

dexter

I know it was all the rage while it aired but Dexter was just one of those shows I always wanted to watch but just never got around to. Showtime has released a trailer for the series revival and it has me thinking maybe I need to add it back to my queue. The series 9th season is set to premier this year, 8 years after what is widely considered one of the worst finales to a popular show. It’s a brand new world out there for TV, with so much new(-ish) content needed every day everything and everyone seems to be getting a second chance (except for Firefly).

The revival picks up with Dexter still laying low in an out of the way town in upstate New York. There’s no official word on the plot, or any specifics really, with some fans sleuthing that the good-guy serial killer will be working at a bait and tackle shop. We do have some casting info, the best of which is famed character actor Clancy Brown taking on the series primary antagonist role.

Dexter is back, this Fall on Showtime

‘The Falcon And The Winter Soldier’ Making-Of Documentary Streaming On Disney+ Tomorrow

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier might have ended last week, but Disney Plus has got you covered until the Loki premiere June 11. The streaming service is releasing a behind the scenes special tomorrow, recounting just how Marvel, writer Malcolm Spellman, director Kari Skogland, and stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan made the epic and timely superhero show.

In Marvel Studio’s Assembled: The Making of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, fans will see just how the show was made from how stunts were performed, to inspirations, behind the show, to how the show’s production changed due to COVID restrictions.

At the end of the series, Sam Wilson (Mackie) officially took up the shield and became Captain while Bucky Barnes (Stan) started to come to terms with his past and make amends to himself. Soon after the finale last week, Disney and Marvel announced that a fourth Captain America film is in the works starring Mackie’s new Cap. Malcolm Spellman is developing the story.

This is not the first behind the scenes series Marvel has dropped on Disney Plus. The studio released an insider look at WandaVision back in March.

Bruce Willis Partners Up With Megan Fox In First Look At ‘Midnight In The Switchgrass’

Bruce Willis has crossed paths with just about every star under the sun, but for the upcoming crime thriller Midnight in the Switchgrass he teams up with Megan Fox for the first time. Oh, and she’s bringing along her real-life boyfriend Colson Baker aka Machine Gun Kelly.

Lionsgate has dropped the first images from Midnight in the Switchgrass, a serial killer film in which Willis and Fox play federal agents on the hunt for a murderer who stalks women. Also in the cast are Emile Hirsch, Lukas Haas, Sistine Stallone, Michael Beach, Caitlin Carmichael, Jackie Cruz, and Alec Monopoly.

Interestingly, the film is directed by Randall Emmett, a big-time producer as part of Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films. This marks his feature directing debut, after helping to back many of Willis’ projects over the years.

Midnight in the Switchgrass opens this July.

Bruce Willis (Glass) and Megan Fox (Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen) star in this gritty and intense crime thriller. While in Florida on another case, FBI agents Helter (Willis) and Lombardi (Fox) cross paths with state cop Crawford (Emile Hirsch, Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood), who’s investigating a string of female murders that appear to be related. But when Lombardi herself is kidnapped, it’s a race against time before she becomes the serial killer’s next victim. Also stars Colson “Machine Gun Kelly” Baker (The Dirt) and Lukas Haas (Inception).

‘Falcon & The Winter Soldier’ Showrunner Is Surprised “How Few” Marvel Projects Fans Are Aware Of

Remember a few years ago when we were all blown away that Kevin Feige had something like 20 Marvel projects all planned out through 2025 that we had heard nothing about? Suffice it to say, the guy is a forward thinker; you kind of have to be to organize something as massive as the MCU. And it only got more challenging with the arrival of so many Disney+ shows.

So it should come as no surprise when Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman says there’s a lot of stuff coming up that he knows about which fans are completely unaware. He told Murphy’s Multiverse

“I was surprised about how few of the upcoming Marvel movies have been announced,” said Spellman. “Fans will start to become more and more clear as these projects get announced.”

Some of these projects we can maybe guess at. Young Avengers seems like a good bet, or a Thunderbolts/Dark Avengers type show considering the path John Walker/USAgent took in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Speaking of which, what about something for good ol’ Bucky now that he’s free of that whole Winter Soldier persona?

According to Spellman in a THR interview, he actually thought about concluding the series with “Captain American and the White Wolf” rather than the title it closed-out on. The White Wolf name would’ve referenced the name given to Bucky by the Wakandans during his convalescence there.

“I got to see that moniker [White Wolf] in watching one of the cuts, and man, it really affected me emotionally,” explained Spellman. “The reason [the closing title card] still says The Winter Soldier is solely based on Marvel feeling like they needed to keep some of the original title in there to land that feeling. I don’t think it had anything to do with where Bucky is going or how Bucky evolved as a character. I think that they felt like if they went too far away from the original title, you wouldn’t feel the impact of those words. But I’m speculating here.”

So Marvel nixed it. Oh well, it doesn’t seem like they had a storyline reason for doing so, just an aesthetic one. Maybe that means Bucky will get his chance a the White Wolf someday? Probably not; that name sorta sucks for a superhero dude.

‘Crimes Of The Future’: David Cronenberg’s Sci-Fi To Star Viggo Mortensen, Kristen Stewart, And Léa Seydoux

David Cronenberg is ready to embark on his first feature since 2014’s Maps to the Stars. Geez, has it really been that long? According to NEON and Serendipty, Cronenberg is set to begin shooting on Crimes of the Future, a sci-fi film starring, who else, Viggo Mortensen, and joined by Léa Seydoux, Kristen Stewart.

Damn. That’s not bad.

Shooting on Crimes of the Future begins this summer, based on an original story, Cronenberg’s first sci-fi since ExistenZ in 1999.  Also in the cast are Scott Speedman, Welket Bungué, Don McKellar, and Lihi Kornowski.

Here’s how the report describes the premise: “[The film takes] a deep dive into the not-so-distant future where humankind is learning to adapt to its synthetic surroundings. This evolution moves humans beyond their natural state and into a metamorphosis, altering their biological makeup. While some embrace the limitless potential of trans-humanism, others attempt to police it. Either way, ‘Accelerated Evolution Syndrome,’ is spreading fast. Saul Tenser is a beloved performance artist who has embraced Accelerated Evolution Syndrome, sprouting new and unexpected organs in his body. Along with his partner Caprice, Tenser has turned the removal of these organs into a spectacle for his loyal followers to marvel at in real-time theatre. But with both the government and a strange subculture taking note, Tenser is forced to consider what would be his most shocking performance of all.”

“I have unfinished business with the future,” Cronenberg said about the film.

This will be the fourth collaboration between Cronenberg and Mortensen, following Eastern Promises, A History of Violence, and A Dangerous Method. Mortensen recently released his directorial debut, Falling, and signed on to star in Ron Howard’s cave rescue drama Thirteen Lives. Stewart will play Princess Di in the upcoming drama Spencer, while Seydoux has the long-delayed No Time to Die later this year.

‘Wrath Of Man’ Red Band Trailer: Jason Statham Has A Score To Settle In Guy Ritchie’s Latest Action Flick

After a couple of high-profile flops in The Man from UNCLE (which is great, btw) and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Guy Ritchie has really come roaring back. Disney’s Aladdin was completely out of his wheelhouse but the film made over $1B, and that was followed by a successful return to his crime flick roots with The Gentlemen. And now Ritchie is back again, reteaming with his old pal Jason Statham for a pair of action films, with the first, Wrath of Man, having released a brand new red band trailer.

An action-packed heist flick, the film stars Statham as a cash truck security guard whose skills are more deadly and and devious than any of them expected, leading them to question who he really is what his true motivations are.

It’s pretty much the sort of thing you want to see from a Ritchie and Statham pairing, and honestly? Their names alone are going to be enough to get a certain audience invested in this no matter what. Count me among them. The duo will team up again next for the spy film Five Eyes.

Also starring Holt McCallany, Jeffrey Donovan, Josh Hartnett, Laz Alonso, Raúl Castillo, Deobia Oparei, Eddie Marsan, and Scott Eastwood, Wrath of Man opens May 7th. Check out the trailer plus a new clip below.

A mysterious and wild-eyed new cash truck security guard (Jason Statham) surprises his coworkers during a heist in which he unexpectedly unleashes precision skills. The crew is left wondering who he is and where he came from. Soon, the marksman’s ultimate motive becomes clear as he takes dramatic and irrevocable steps to settle a score.

‘Sweet Tooth’ Trailer: Robert Downey Jr. And Jim Mickle Bring The Strange Comic Book Series To Netflix

Netflix has made itself a home for adaptations of acclaimed comic books, and they have another with Sweet Tooth. Jeff Lemire’s Vertigo Comics series is a strange mix of Alice in Wonderland, Mad Max, and Bambi, detailing an antlered half-human/half-animal hybrid boy’s journey through a post-apocalyptic wasteland alongside a violent drifter.  And bringing this show is another odd combination, as Robert Downey Jr. produces while Jim Mickle, best known for horror We Are What We Are, thriller Cold in July, and the series Hap & Leonard co-runs the show.

Sweet Tooth stars Christian Convery as Gus, a deer-boy born after the world is ripped apart by a viral outbreak. Upon the death of his caretaker, Gus sets out into the dangerous wasteland to find a new home, joined by Tommy Jeppard (Artemis Fowl‘s Nonso Anozie), a pretty good bodyguard since he’s frickin’ massive and wields a deadly crossbow. Good guy to have around.

Also in the cast are Adeel Akhtar, Aliza Vellani, Stefania LaVie Owen, Dania Ramirez, Neil Sandilands, Will Forte, and James Brolin.

Mickle is joined by co-writer and co-showrunner Beth Schwartz.

“We wanted to make a show that offers escape and adventure, where nature is reclaiming the world and in many ways it feels like a fairytale,” said Mickle. “‘Sweet Tooth’ is a new kind of dystopian story, it’s very lush and hopeful. We want people to come into this world where there’s beauty and hope and adventure. This is a sweeping story — we ride on trains, climb mountaintops, run through forests. This is a show about what makes a family, what home really means, and why it’s important to keep faith in humanity.”

Schwartz added, “‘Sweet Tooth’ the series has been in the making since 2016, and the comics existed even well before that, but I think everyone is going to relate to the show and this story even more than we even thought when we first started working on it. When you watch ‘Sweet Tooth,’ you feel hopeful about the future.”

Netflix will release Sweet Tooth on June 4th.

Years after “The Great Crumble” changed everything, a hybrid deer-boy forms an unlikely bond with a wandering loner. Together, they embark on an extraordinary adventure through the lush, dangerous world left behind, searching for the meaning of home.
