Well it’s about time! I was beginning to think we would need to send out Sherlock Holmes himself to detect why Netflix hadn’t already greenlit a sequel to Enola Holmes. The charming film that had Millie Bobby Brown as Sherlock’s brilliant younger sister was one of last year’s true joys, especially during the height of the pandemic, and now we know her story will continue.
Not only will Millie Bobby Brown return as Enola Holmes, but Henry Cavill is back as her more famous brother, Sherlock. Sam Claflin played the stuffy Mycroft Holmes, while Helena Bonham Carter was Enola’s rebellious mother. So far it seems neither is coming back.
Harry Bradbeer will return to direct, along with writer Jack Thorne. Shooting is tentatively set to begin at the end of the year.
Here’s what Brown had to say…
“I can’t wait to collaborate again with my Enola Holmes family! Enola holds a special place in my heart – she’s strong, fearless, intelligent and brave. I look forward to fans seeing how her journey continues!”
The sequel is afoot!
The adventure continues as Millie Bobby Brown & Henry Cavill return to the world of ENOLA HOLMES, reteaming with director Harry Bradbeer & writer Jack Thorne on a second film based on Nancy Springer’s book series about Sherlock Holmes’ brilliant sister. ? pic.twitter.com/7tsr1fbej2
Despite GI Joe being just as much of a popular ’80s toy franchise and cartoon as Transformers, the soldier boys and girls have never found similar success on the big screen. It seemed like that would happen with GI Joe: Retaliation (the damn thing had Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum, AND Bruce Willis), and while it improved on the previous film, a sequel never got off the ground. Paramount and Hasbro haven’t given up, though, and have launched what is basically a soft reboot focused on the most popular Joe of all.
EW has released our first look at Henry Goulding in Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins, playing the titular ninja warrior. The Crazy Rich Asians actor suits up as the stealthy commando in a story that pulls back the hood on his beginnings in the Arishikaga ninja clan, and the start of his blood feud with Storm Shadow, who we see played by Andrew Koji. Also in the cast are Iko Uwais as Hard Master and Peter Mensah as Blind Master, and honestly I’m most excited about them.
The images also reveal Samara Weaving as Scarlett, Úrsula Corberó as The Baroness, and Haruka Abe as Akiko. Behind the camera is Robert Schwentke (RIPD) from a script by Evan Spiliotopoulos.
Goulding talked about how excited he was for fans to finally see this side of Snake Eyes on the big screen…
“Having this solo movie, we get to set the precedent for where [Snake’s] story leads. It’s phenomenal that Paramount and Hasbro chose to go right to the beginning and really start off with such a story. It gives so much more creative control over where this universe is going. I’m crazy excited to see what we do next.”
Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins opens in theaters on July 23rd, followed by Paramount+ about 45 days later.
Are you ready for a ride on the Jungle Cruise with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt? The long-awaited Disney comedy, another film based on one of their theme park attractions, will arrive in theatres and Disney+ Premier Access on July 30th.
Johnson announced the news himself over Instagram, post-workout of course!!!
Jungle Cruise stars Blunt as Lily, a biologist in search of a rare plant with healing properties. Johnson plays Frank, a disgruntled riverboat captain steering her through the dangerous Amazon rainforest. Also in the cast are Paul Giamatti, Edgar Ramirez, Jack Whitehall, and Jesse Plemons. Jaume Collet-Serra is directing, and will reunite with Johnson later for Black Adam.
Like most other films, Jungle Cruise has been set back nearly a year due to the pandemic. But you can’t blame COVID-19 for all of the delays, as it was originally to open in October 2019 before moving to July 2020, and finally to the current date.
What’s clear is that Disney really likes this combined theatrical/Disney+ Premiere strategy, having used it successfully with Mulan, Raya and the Last Dragon, and upcoming films Cruella and Black Widow. Might this be a plan that’s here to stay?
While there’s no stateside release date planned just yet, a new film by Girlhood and Portrait of a Lady On Fire director Céline Sciamma is too big to ignore, even when the trailer is in French. And so we have a look at her latest, Petite Maman, a family drama that made its debut at the recent Berlin Film Festival. Here’s the synopsis:
Eight-year-old Nelly has just lost her beloved grandmother and is helping her parents clean out her mother’s childhood home. She explores the house and the surrounding woods where her mum, Marion, used to play and where she built the treehouse Nelly has heard so much about. One day her mother suddenly leaves. That is when Nelly meets a girl of her own age in the woods, building a treehouse. Her name is Marion.
The cast includes Joséphine Sanz, Gabrielle Sanz, Nina Meurisse, Stéphane Varupenne, and Margot Abascal. Petite Maman will hit French theaters in June, and I imagine it’ll arrive here shortly thereafter.
The Hitman’s Bodyguard sorta came out of nowhere back in 2017. The foul-mouthed action comedy gave us Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson laughing and cursing it up to the tune of $176M worldwide and was one of the summer’s biggest hits. A sequel was all but inevitable, because who doesn’t want more of the same? And that’s what we’re getting with The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, which brings back everybody we loved from the first movie, while adding a few more key names into the mix.
Salma Hayek, who played the spicy Sonia Kincaid, wife to Jackson’s hitman character Darius, takes the spotlight here as she helps bodyguard Bryce (Reynolds) rescue her husband from an assassination. The plot’s pretty much the same because why rock the boat? Frank Grillo, Morgan Freeman, and Antonio Banderas joining the cast should help keep things interesting.
Once again penned by Tom O’Connor and directed by Patrick Hughes, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard opens June 16th.
The world’s most lethal odd couple – bodyguard Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) and hitman Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) – are back on another life-threatening mission. Still unlicensed and under scrutiny, Bryce is forced into action by Darius’s even more volatile wife, the infamous international con artist Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek). As Bryce is driven over the edge by his two most dangerous protectees, the trio gets in over their heads in a global plot and soon finds that they are all that stands between Europe and a vengeful and powerful madman (Antonio Banderas). Joining in the fun and deadly mayhem is Morgan Freeman as…well, you’ll have to see.
The last solid thing we’ve heard about Marvel’s plans for Ghost Rider came a couple of years ago when an attempted live-action series got canned before it even started. While various rumors have suggested the Spirit of Vengeance will be turning up in the MCU soon, a new one by That Hashtag Show (judge accordingly) says exactly where that’ll be.
A new version of Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider will reportedly debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Might we see the flaming skull himself square off with the Master of the Mystic Arts? The site has absolutely no details on this other than say that some concept art has been seen, whcih means exactly nothing, to be honest. I have concept art for the greatest X-Man ever, Longshot, as a Stormtrooper but it doesn’t make it a reality.
But to entertain this for a bit, alongside Doctor Strange would be a decent spot for Ghost Rider to appear as both are part of Marvel’s mystical realm and share many of the same foes. I could possibly see Marvel casting an actor to play Johnny Blaze, the human host of the Ghost Rider, while saving his fiery side for a different movie all to himself.
We’ll see. I don’t put much stock in this one, but I’m curious enough to entertain the possibility. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opens March 25th 2022.
Netflix didn’t achieve awards season success right away; it took years of finding the right projects until they eventually broke through with Roma. Apple TV+ is still in those early stages now, but with exclusive projects such as Cherry, Greyhound, Killers of the Flower Moon, and festival darling CODA, it’s clear they are on the right track. And now you can add another that is almost guaranteed to be an Oscars contender in the very near future.
Apple will team with A24 to distribute Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, which stars Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand as two of Shakespeare’s most well-known characters; the title character and the manipulative Lady Macbeth. Um, yeah, Washington and McDormand have six Oscar wins between them, and with Coen that makes twelve. Just sayin’. This will be the first film ever directed by just one-half of the Coen Brothers duo, as Ethan is sitting this one out.
Also in the cast are Brendan Gleeson, Corey Hawkins, Sean Patrick Thomas, Ralph Ineson, and Brian Thompson.
Announced a couple of years ago, we won’t have to wait long to see it. A24 plans to release The Tragedy of Macbeth in theaters this fall, no shock there, before moving to Apple TV+ streaming. [Deadline]
Life doesn’t always go as planned and August (Courtney Parchman) is finding that out the hard way. She lives in a shitty rat-infested house with her college friend McCall (Luxy Banner). McCall has a stable job and is branching out into other social circles, only adding to August’s anxiety. The two of them moved to Austin after college not knowing anyone. While McCall seems to be flourishing, August is worried that she is being left in the dust. One Friday evening McCall has a work event leaving August to fend for herself. She decides to take on some ride shares for a little extra money and that’s where she meets Caleb (Alejandro Rose-Garcia).
The Get Together centers on Caleb, a musician who is just floating through life. His friends and bandmates are all moving on – having children, going to farmer’s markets, in relationships – the whole nine yards. In the meantime, Caleb is still just getting by. He doesn’t have the same zest for life as he did when he was dating Betsy (Johanna Braddy). He realized that she is the love of his life, but only after it was too late and she was already in New York.
After a gig Caleb makes his way to a party, and as fate would have it, Betsy is attending after being out of town for two years. The only problem is that she is with her new boyfriend Damien (Jacob Artist). If things couldn’t get worse, Damien is also preparing on proposing to Betsy that evening. Realizing Caleb left his phone in her car, August goes into the party. She sees McCall there and sets off a chain of events affecting everyone’s evenings and lives.
The Get Together is directed by Will Bakke who also co-wrote it with Michael B. Allen. The Get Together was first conceived as a 10-minute short of the same name In 2015 by Allen and Bakke. They have evolved this quick video to a feature length film. While The Get Together is still on the shorter side, at an hour and some change, it gave Allen and Bakke more room to expand the concept of the original. They also brought back some of the stars from the 2015 version. Most notably Chad Werner who played the main character in the original and Lucas, Betsy’s old stoner friend, in the new version.
The Get Together almost entirely takes place at a party during that one night. As each character goes about their evening their stories become intertwined. The actions of one unwittingly causes reactions for the others. While this isn’t the first time we have seen films set up like this, Bakke and Allen manage to make The Get Together an enjoyable watch. The cast really propels the film forward, led by Parchman. Parchman’s August is an absolute train wreck and she nails it. The character can’t seem to get out of her own way and her hijinks are a joy to watch. The cast’s efforts and Bakke and Allen’s script combine to make you care about the characters. You feel invested in what they are going through.
The Get Together can be outlandish at times and too neat in others, but Bakke and Allen always manage to reel it in and find a comfortable middle ground. The film is broken into sections, each following particular characters. This really helps move the narrative forward and gives the audience an interesting perspective into everyone’s evenings. There are plenty of hilarious moments throughout The Get Together, led mainly by outrageous party hosts Garrison (Preston Flagg) and Lucas. What kind of party would it be without awesome music – and that’s what we get during The Get Together. Bakke is able to really capture the spirit of raging house parties helping to make The Get Together a good time. It may not be earth shattering or a film you’ll remember for years, but The Get Together is certainly worth a watch, and it’s a quick one at that.
The Get Together will be available On Demand on May 14, 2021.
Ok, I admit that title is a bit harsh, everyone knows that Emily Blunt and John Krasinski are awesome. What’s not fantastic though, is that the smartest fan casting since Sebastian Stan was suggested for young(ish) Luke Skywalker, looks to be nothing more then a pipe dream. Emily Blunt, who was on Howard Stern’s eternal show to promote The Quiet Place 2 had the following to say when asked about the rumors:
“That is fan-casting. No one has received a phone call. That’s just people saying, ‘Wouldn’t that be great?’”
It’s heart breaking really…the Fantastic Four would have a perfect role in the MCU as Marvel’s first family. I know alot of people are shouting “Younger, Younger!” but let me tell you why that’s a bad idea. We have the New Avengers spinning up, and while some of the legacy members are sticking around what the team really needs is some responsible leadership. Krasinski and Blunt as Reed Richards and Sue Storm would be PERFECT as the defacto parents of the whole group. I say this knowing that, while he was no fit for Steve Rodgers, Krasinski does have an odd combination of both intellectually and physically able to his whole…thing, that makes him perfect for the patron nerd of superheroes.
Blunt went on to say that she doesn’t believe these films are below her…they just aren’t her thing and that Superhero fatigue is definitely something she’s starting to feel. All this being said, you know what the beautiful thing is? We can still believe, plenty of folks have outright lied about their casting and talks with the studio(s). I choose to believe folks!
Another day, another huge casting announcement for Rian Johnson’s Knives Out 2. Over the last couple of days, Dave Bautista and Edward Norton have joined Daniel Craig in what is shaping up to have even more star power than the previous film. And now it gets even better with the addition of award-winning singer and actor, Janelle Monae.
The multi-talented Monae is the latest to board Knives Out 2 according to THR. Details on her role? Who knows, and we’re not likely to know anything until Johnson has filled out his ensemble. All we need to know is that Monae’s character is likely to be in the middle of another murder mystery investigated by quirky detective, Benoit Blanc.
Monae had a busy 2020, with roles in The Glorias, Antebellum, and the second season of Homecoming. I can’t wait to see how she interacts among a group as tremendous as this is shaping up to be.
Knives Out 2 is the first of two sequels Johnson is developing for Netflix, who are clearly hoping to attract the same audience that made the first film a $300M success.
