Watch Out Cap! Here Comes Soldier Boy!

Soldier Boy

My love of Supernatural is well documented on this site, especially if you’ve been checking out our weekly podcast, Cinema Royale (you have, haven’t you?). Jensen Ackles, who’s spent the last 15 years playing Dean Winchester on that amazing piece of entertainment, is up to bat on his next big project. Ackles will be playing Soldier Boy on Season 3 of the hit Amazon series The Boys. For the uninitiated, Soldier Boy is like a Bizarro world Captain America. One of the first “Supes” created by Vought, he fought in World War 2 and has pretty much all of Steve Rodgers traits but one, that pesky Boy Scout morality.

Eric Kripke, who also created Supernatural and is now showrunner for The Boys, shared the images of Ackles in full costume via Twitter. First impression is that they are going to be giving us a more serious version of the character. In the comics Soldier Boy was a complete joke, decapitating people while reciting the Star Spangled Banner. THIS soldier boy seems a little more serious, which is a bit of a departure for The Boys which has stuck pretty close to the source material…right down to Homelander “enjoying himself” atop a skyscraper. In any event, I’m glad to see Ackles get a shot at something high profile. I know I’ll get made fun of for this, but he’s got tons of potential for super-stardom.

Filming began on Season 3 in late February, so it’s going to be some time before we get to see the real debut of Soldier Boy. Until then stay tuned for all the latest!

Rob Zombie Meets His Perfect Match As Director Of Peacocks Revival Film ‘The Munsters’

The Munsters

Rob Zombie. One thing you know, and one thing you may not. First, the nuevo master of the macabre has long been inspired by 60s/70s horror asthetics. Second, that which you may not know, he’s actually a pretty funny guy. Seriously, look up any podcasts he’s appeared on, he’s surprisingly funny and incredibly sharp. What do you get when you combine these two facts? The Adams Family of course! Ughh…wait no, that’s Wednesday the new series appearing on Netflix in a revival by Tim Burton. But, wherever there’s an Addams, you’re sure to find The Munsters nearby, and THAT is where Mr. Zombie pops in. NBCU has the former White Zombie frontman signed on to direct the feature film, which will most likely premier on Peacock.

Quick side note, in case the brass at Peacock is checking these articles. STOP putting commercials in the programming for the people that pay additional cash to NOT have commercials. You have a disclaimer that you will still play commericals where contractually obligated but the only commercials I ever see are for, wait for it, Peacock shows. You are not contractually obligated to yourselves.

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.

Check out the Instagram post by Zombie below, and stay tuned for more info on what is sure to be, at a bare minimum, a visually appealing revival!

JCVD Is Back To His Old Tricks In The Trailer For ‘The Last Mercenary’

The Last Mercenary

#GEEKEDWEEK, Netflix’s week long look at what’s to come, is off to a split-kicking start with the trailer for Van-Damme’s new, French-language action movie The Last Mercenary. The film itself looks fairly standard. A former Secret Service agent is summoned back to France when his son gets mixed up with corrupt politicians and the mafia. Van Damme hasn’t done any high profile straight up action in a while, so I had a feeling something would be different here. They had me at first, not gonna lie, then about halfway through the humor of the whole thing comes in full bore, starting with JCVD rocking a 80s hair metal wig, kicking ass. Quick shots of the man in different costumes doing the same level of ass-kicking has the classic muscles from Brussels fan in me ready to add this one to my queue.

The Last Mercenary hits Netflix July 30th, 2021

‘She Said’: Carey Mulligan And Zoe Kazan To Play Reporters Who Broke The Weinstein Scandal Story

Photo: Amy Sussman (Getty Images)

It’s hard to believe it’s been four years since the walls came tumbling down for Harvey Weinstein, thanks to a bombshell expose from New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and , According to Deadline, Universal Pictures is prepping to take the story to the big screen, with She Said, using the subsequent book Twohey and Jodi wrote as its source material. She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement reached the New York Times Bestseller list and is credited as one of the main reasons Weinstein was brought to justice.

As for a cast, Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan are currently in talks to star as Twohey and Kantor. Production is scheduled to begin this summer and will be directed by Maria Schrader (Unorthodox) and written by Oscar-winner Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Ida, Colette). Mulligan and Kazan worked together on 2018’s Wildlife, where the former starred and the latter co-wrote the screenplay.

My hope is that the focus of She Said remains on Twohey and Kantor’s search for the truth and not on an actor playing Weinstein, like we saw with John Lithgow’s performance as Roger Ailes in Bombshell. An approach similar to Spotlight, where the focus is on the journalists themselves and a few of the victims, might be the way to go.

‘Loki’ Series To Impact MCU In Greater Ways Than Any Previous Marvel Show

The early reviews for Loki are out, and so far they’ve been glowing. I’ve yet to chime in so I’ll just say this: Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson might be the best Marvel buddy duo out there. And none of the Marvel shows can touch this one in terms of scope and the potential impact it will have on the MCU. The way we look at the Multiverse is going to change drastically.

Marvel’s Kevin Feige knows what’s up. Speaking with Empire, he says Loki is going to make a much bigger impact than Falcon and the Winter Soldier or WandaVision. That says quite a lot, doesn’t it?

“It’s tremendously important. It perhaps will have more impact on the MCU than any of the shows thus far. What everybody thought about ‘WandaVision,’ and was true, and ‘The Falcon And The Winter Soldier,’ which was true, is even more sort of true for ‘Loki,’” Feige said.

So what might that “impact” look like? Loki’s travels across the Multiverse could explain some of the characters, and changes to them, that we see in future projects. And we have to take into account that writer Michael Waldron is also working with Sam Raimi on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which we know is going to be a centerpiece film during Phase 4 with a direct connection to WandaVision.

In other words, Loki is not a show to miss. It debuts this Wednesday, June 9th, on Disney+.

‘Black Panther 2’ Casting Rumor: Tenoch Huerta As Namor The Sub-Mariner

Upcoming Marvel movies have a reputation for being kept under-wraps but since Chadwick Boseman’s death last summer, details surrounding Black Panther: Wakanda Forever are few and far between. We do know that director Ryan Coogler will be returning with most of the cast from the first film including Danai Guirira, Letita Wright, Winston Duke, Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett and Martin Freeman joining him.

However, the website Illuminerdi is claiming the sequel’s potential villain will be Namor the Sub-Mariner played by Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta. Seen in Narcos: Mexico and Sin Nombre, if this rumor is true, this will be Huerta’s first big blockbuster project. The inclusion of Namor could mean fans will finally be introduced to the Atlanteans and their underwater world. There was speculation that Sub-mariner and the Atlanteans were referenced by Okoye when she was updating Natasha Romanoff in Avengers: Endgame. As of now we don’t know how they are going to be incorporated in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever but Namor and his kind could be at odds with the Wakandans and the Dora Milaje.

This bit of possible news is a longtime coming for the MCU. We reported back in 2019 that the aquatic anti-hero could appear in either the Doctor Strange or Black Panther sequel after a now deleted tweet from former Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson hinted at silver screen appearance of Namor in the former surgeon’s second film. However, Derrickson has since left the project and the script reworked. That doesn’t mean though Namor couldn’t make a cameo appearance in the Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness as the two characters were often adversaries in the comics. That film is set for release on March 25, 2022, with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hitting theaters July 8, 2022

Anya Taylor-Joy Will Dine With Ralph Fiennes In Culinary Comedy ‘The Menu’

Anya Taylor-Joy

Anya Taylor-Joy is adding another big time project to a list that already includes Robert Eggers’ The Northman, Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa, and Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho. Deadline reports she will replace Emma Stone in The Menu, a dark comedy that has Ralph Fiennes attached to star.

You may recall this as a project set up with Alexander Payne a few years ago, but he dropped out and was replaced by Succession director Mark Mylod.  Will Tracy and Seth Reiss penned the script which takes place in the culinary world, centering on a young couple who attend a tasting at an exclusive restaurant on a remote island. Fiennes will play the chef with Taylor-Joy as one half of the dining couple. It’s still unknown who will be joining her.

Taylor-Joy is coming off a red-hot year that saw her in the period dramedy EMMA and win an Emmy for her performance in The Queen’s Gambit.

‘No Sudden Move’ Trailer: Benicio Del Toro And Don Cheadle Are In Over Their Heads In Steven Soderbergh’s Crime Film

Steven Soderbergh has always been a prolific filmmaker, but he’s been moving at an accelerated clip with five movies over the span of five years, plus HBO’s Mosaic and even the Academy Awards. His latest, No Sudden Move, is a star-studded crime ensemble not unlike his breakout film Out of Sight.

In the trailer for No Sudden Move we see stars Benicio Del Toro and Don Cheadle, both Soderbergh veterans, as part of a group of small-time criminals hired for what should be a simple snatch job, only to have the heist go terribly wrong. Don’t they always?

Also in the cast are David Harbour, Jon Hamm, Ray Liotta, and Brendan Fraser. Amy Seimetz, Kieran Culkin, Noah Jupe, Julia Fox, Bill Duke, and some guy named Matt Damon.

The film reunites Soderbergh with Mosaic writer Ed Solomon, who is known to most people as one of the guys behind the Bill & Ted franchise.

No Sudden Move hits theaters and HBO Max on July 1st. It’s his second in a three-picture deal, preceded by last year’s Let Them All Talk, which is pretty great.

Set in 1955 in Detroit, No Sudden Move centers on a group of small-time criminals who are hired to steal what they think is a simple document. When their plan goes horribly wrong, their search for who hired them – and for what ultimate purpose – weave them through all echelons of the race-torn, rapidly changing city.

‘F9’ Is Bringing A Shot Of Adrenaline To The Cannes Film Festival

F9, yes THAT F9, the one with Vin Diesel breaking the laws of gravity in vehicles meant for the ground, is headed to the Cannes Film Festival.

Yes, THAT Cannes Film Festival, not some geek offshoot or anything, but the actual one.

That’s right. The Wages of Fear, Blue is the Warmest Colour, Pulp Fiction, Parasite, and now F9. In recent weeks we were promised that a “planetary blockbuster” would be headed to the acclaimed festival event that draws art house moviegoers from around the globe. And now Variety confirms that F9 will be that blockbuster.

Other options on the table were Dune, West Side Story, and No Time to Die, although that last one was ruled out pretty early. The news arrives as F9 has crossed $250M internationally, and that’s without having opened in most markets, including the U.S. Things are speeding along at a quarter-mile at a time, indeed.

So hey, it’s not like F9 is in competition or anything. So we won’t be able to label it “Palme d’Or winner”, as fun as that might be.

This actually isn’t too different from what Sundance does every year. They have a secret screening that is typically a blockbuster movie (I’ve seen Nymphomaniac, Get Out, and Fighting With My Family at these screenings) that wouldn’t typically play there. So I don’t know why this feels so much more ludicrous.

F9 hits theaters here on June 25th.
