‘Black Widow’ Gets Early Digital And Blu-ray Release, Includes Nine Deleted Scenes

Processed with MOLDIV

If you’ve paid attention to the box office the last couple of weeks, the number have not been good for Black Widow. After a pandemic record-breaking start, the film has had some epic drops and so far has earned “just” $314M worldwide. So the timing on this news, while maybe unconnected, is probably the right idea at the right moment.

Black Widow will hit all digital platforms on August 10th, followed by Bluray, Ultra 4K HD, and DVD on September 14th. A total of nine deleted scenes will be included. Is this Disney just giving up on the film’s theatrical run, or what? Maybe, maybe not. Disney has been moving quickly to get blockbusters out there as much as possible. Raya and the Last Dragon sat in the top 10 earners for ages, but it, like Mulan, hit all digital platforms after a month and physical media soon after.

We don’t know the numbers for Black Widow through Disney Premier Access. They might be tremendous, but as it stands the film is the second-lowest theatrical release for Marvel Studios. It makes the box office prospects of Eternals, Shang-Chi, and other Marvel films very uncertain.

David Gordon Green To Direct Trilogy Of ‘The Exorcist’ Sequels, Ellen Burstyn To Return Joined By Leslie Odom Jr.

Figuring out where David Gordon Green would land next has always been difficult, given the range of his films includes indies like George Washington and stoner comedies such as Your Highness. He seems to have settled into a specific kind of horror remake groove now, following his hit Halloween films, an upcoming Hellraiser series, and as we learned last month, a sequel to The Exorcist alongside Blumhouse.

But today comes word that this won’t be just a single movie, but an entire trilogy of Exorcist films acquired by NBC Universal and Peacock for a whopping $400M! Damn. Green will write and direct each film, with Jason Blum producing and the folks at Morgan Creek, who have held the rights for years, on board, too.

In keeping with Green’s Halloween which brought Jamie Lee Curtis back into the franchise, The Exorcist will see Ellen Burstyn return as Chris MacNeil, whose child Regan was the demon’s victim in the first movie. Burstyn wasn’t involved in the sequels or the latter prequels that followed. Joining her will be Leslie Odom Jr., who will play a father whose child has been possessed. He turns to Chris for help, probably because she’s been through craziness herself. [NYT]

WWE And Blumhouse Team For Scripted Vince McMahon Series Set During The ’90s Steroid Scandal

Vince McMahon is the most powerful force in all of sports entertainment/professional wrestling. Like him or not, and frankly a lot of us fall in the “not” camp, McMahon has grown WWE from a regional brand to a global powerhouse, but he’s also survived a lot of public turbulence and legal trouble. Now he is teaming up with Blumhouse Television for The United States of America vs. Vince McMahon, which will center on one of the darkest periods for the WWE.

The United States of America Vs. Vince McMahon is the first scripted series to focus on Vince McMahon, who has been running World Wrestling Entertainment (formerly World Wrestling Federation) for decades. In the ’90s, better known to fans as the “Attitude Era”, the Mr. McMahon character, a heightened egomanical version of Vince, became incredibly popular for his feud with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. This was also the time when McMahon was facing scrutiny for the rampant steroid abuse running through the company. The headlines caught the attention of the FBI, and in 1994 McMahon was indicted for supplying anabolic steroids to his superstars. McMahon fought the charges and was ultimately acquitted.

All of this was taking place when the WWE was at its lowest point, facing the emergence of rival WCW, and nearing bankruptcy. But out of the turmoil WWE would explode to become the dominant brand in all of sports entertainment.

McMahon and WWE exec Kevin Dunn will serve as exec-producers, along with Jason Blum. WWE and Blumhouse have worked together in the past on horror film Incarnate and the superhero drama Sleight.

I just want to know who’ll play McMahon, and if he can match the CEO’s infamous grapefruits-swinging swagger. [Deadline]

‘Parallel Mothers’ Trailer: Pedro Almodóvar And Penelope Cruz Reunite For A New Motherhood Drama This Christmas

That didn’t take long. It was just this morning that Pedro Almodovar’s latest, Parallel Mothers, was announced as kicking off the Venice Film Festival. And just like that Sony Pictures Classics has released the new trailer along with a holiday release date ripe for the awards season.

Parallel Mothers will open in theaters on December 24th, as confirmed by Sony Pictures Classics this morning. The film reunites Almodovar with his muse, Penelope Cruz, while also returning to the matriarchal dramas of his earlier career with All About My Mother and Talk To Her.

Cruz is joined in the cast by Milena Smit, Israel Elejalde, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Rossy de Palma and Julieta Serrano.

Here’s the synopsis followed by the Parallel Mothers trailer.

PARALLEL MOTHERS is a drama that centers on three mothers, portrayed by Cruz, Gijón, and Smit. The film expands Almodóvar’s previous depictions of womanhood by turning his focus on imperfect mothers, in a departure from his prior work exploring mothers and motherhood.

‘Army Of Thieves’ Trailer: Matthias Schweighöfer Returns As Fan-Favorite Safecracker Dieter In ‘Army Of The Dead’ Prequel

The most popular character to emerge from Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead? It wasn’t Dave Bautista’s Scott Ward, surprisingly. Instea, it was Dieter, the chatty safecracker played with such tremendous humor and personality by Matthias Schweighöfer, who created a small-time criminal that we wanted to see beyond the zombie apocalypse. Well, now his fans will get that chance with Army of Thieves, a prequel that will fill in the holes of Dieter’s backstory.

With a story by Snyder and script by Army of the Dead and John Wick 4 writer Shay Hatten, Army of Thieves has Schweighöfer himself behind the camera. While this is the biggest directorial project of his career, it’s hardly Schweighöfer’s first as he directed and starred in every episode of Amazon’s first foreign-language series, You Are Wanted.

Here’s the Army of Thieves synopsis:

In this prequel to Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead,” small-town bank teller Dieter gets drawn into the adventure of a lifetime when a mysterious woman recruits him to join a crew of Interpol’s most wanted criminals, attempting to heist a sequence of legendary, impossible-to-crack safes across Europe.

Army of Thieves hits Netflix this fall and co-stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan, Jonathan Cohen, and Noémie Nakai.

Comic-Con: Syfy and USA Bring The World Series of Slaughter During Their Panel and Trailer for ‘The Legacy of Chucky’

Legacy of Chucky

We all know Charles Lee Ray, aka Chucky, is one of the most iconic slashers of the 80’s. What he’s missing in stature he makes up for in body count and one-liners, rivaled only by Freddy Kruger in the latter. Syfy and USA hosted a panel for their upcoming show The Legacy of Chucky during this years Comic-Con@Home showcasing the 8-part series and giving a deep look into not just the show itself, but also the seeds from which it was grown. The 15min clip takes clips from the panel and behind the scenes commentary to shape our outlook for the show, ended by a full length trailer for the horror series which is set to debut on Halloween.

The biggest bit of awesome I took from the panel was that, unlike the recent film remake, they’re keeping the supernatural aspect of it all. Moreover, it’s a continuation of Child’s Play 2, following Andy and his step/foster sister Kyle as they navigate a new swath of terror cut by the world’s worst Christmas present. This means nostalgia galore. No redesign of the face (though, I didn’t mind the remakes changes), no techno-horror slant, just good old fashioned voodoo-enabled murder rampages. Oh, almost forgot the most important part…Brad Dourif, the original voice of Chucky, is back to voice the doll as well.

The footage we get splattered through out the behind the scenes stuff, coupled with the trailer at the tail end of the video have got me hyped. Yes, for the nostalgia stuff, but also because this was not hastily put together. It’s a group of people that get what made Child’s Play the source of every kid’s nightmares that was born between ’75 and ’85. The dichotomy between Chucky being friendly and, basically, grooming a kid during a video game session, and Chucky in full on murderistic glee is what made this series terrifying and it’s on full display here. Past that, the show appears to be shot incredibly well, making full use of angling to highlight Chucky’s size while still maintaining the primal fear we seem to have of dolls in general. The featured image in this article is my exhibit A.

While I tend to withhold excitement for these nostalgia based projects, I have to admit that I’m fully onboard when it comes to The Legacy of Chucky at this point.

Box Office: ‘Old’ Outfoxes ‘Snake Eyes’ With $16.5M Debut

  1. Old (review)- $16.5M

A mixed bag here for M. Night Shyamalan. His latest thriller, Old, topped the charts with $16.5M plus another $6M overseas. Not bad for these pandemic times. However, the film was terribly well-received, and that domestic launch is the lowest grossing of his career. Damn. That said, Old can hardly be considered a dud. The fable-esque story about a group of people on an isolated beach that ages them rapidly only cost the filmmaker about $18M, far from the blockbuster-sized films of his past.

2. Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins (review)- $13.5M

Ugh. This is sad, but not unexpected. Nobody really asked for a prequel/relaunch of the GI Joe franchise, even one centered on its most popular character. Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins cast Crazy Rich Asians pretty boy Henry Golding as the masked ninja commando, and opened with just $13.5M. That’s a far cry even from the previous two films, with GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra making $300M in 2009 and the Dwayne Johnson/Bruce Willis/Channing Tatum-led GI Joe: Retaliation only mustering $375M in 2013. Perhaps it’s time to accept that people don’t want GI Joe on the big screen?

3. Black Widow– $11.6M/$154.8M

4. Space Jam: A New Legacy– $9.5M/$51.3M

5. F9– $4.7M/$163.3M

6. Escape Room: Tournament of Champions– $3.4M/$16M

7. The Boss Baby: Family Business– $2.7M/$50.1M

8. The Forever Purge– $2.3M/$40.3M

9. A Quiet Place Part II– $1.2M/$157.5M

10. Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain– $830K/$3.7M

Comic-Con: ‘Doctor Who’ Panel

The Doctor Gains New Companions Along With A "Game Of Thrones' Star Joining The Iconic Show

Doctor Who

In the last episode of Doctor Who (“Revolution of the Daleks”), companions Ryan (Tosin Cole) and his grandfather Graham (Bradley Walsh) decided that they wanted to return back to their normal lives and opted to stop going on adventures with The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker).  Yasmin (Mandip Gill) opted to remain as The Doctor’s companion and will continue going on space and time-traveling adventures with the Time Lord.  The end credits of the episode teased a new Companion named Dan (John Bishop) would be joining the cast in the upcoming 13th season of the show.

The Comic-Con @Home panel for the upcoming season of Doctor Who provided a brief trailer of the new season, introduced the audience to the new Companion Dan, as well as a few more tidbits of the upcoming season of the show.  In the released trailer there was a blink and you’ll miss it moment showing a familiar face for us geeks.  In addition to John Bishop joining the cast, Game of Thrones vet Jacob Anderson (who played Unsullied leader Grey Worm in GOT) will have a recurring role as Vinder.

Showrunner Chris Chibnall also stated that the storytelling format of the show is changing in this new season.  While Doctor Who usually has an ongoing story arc, it often adopts an “Episode of the Week” format for the most part.  Chibnall confirmed that with this season of the show, Doctor Who will follow a serialized storytelling format and each episode will be episodic chapters for the entire season, similar to how pretty much every TV show does it nowadays.  Chibnall also commented that Covid has impacted the show’s filing (which is still ongoing with an anticipated late 2021 premiere), but instead of working on limited sets without monsters/aliens, they decided to “go big” while adhering to Covid protocols (newcomer John Bishop even commented how he still hasn’t seen some cast and crew members chins) and promise an outstanding season.

Be sure to take a look at the Doctor Who Comic-Con @Home panel and tune in to the 13th season when it premieres later this year.

‘Ahsoka’: Live-Action Grand Admiral Thrawn And Ezra Bridger Roles Reportedly Set

Months ago we reported on a story where Aladdin actor Mena Massoud was rumored to have been cast in the Star Wars Disney Plus show Ahsoka as Ezra Bridger. The character was last seen in Star Wars Rebels where he disappeared alongside Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Well, that rumor resurfaced this weekend by LRM Online, this time adding the supposed actor playing Thrawn. They say Massoud is set to play Ezra Bridger on the Ahsoka series. As for the role of Thrawn, Star Wars Rebels fans should be happy with this casting rumor as the actor who voiced him on the show will play him in the live-action continuation. That’s right, Lars Mikkelsen is reportedly playing Ahsoka’s adversary in the new show just like he did on the old one.

Mikkelsen (who happens to be Mads Mikkelsen’s brother) is known to American audiences for his appearances in The Killing, House of Cards, and of course, Star Wars Rebels. He also played one of Benedict Cumberbatch’s greatest adversaries on Sherlock.

The last we saw of Bridger and Thrawn it was in the series finale of Star Wars Rebels, as both were being pulled into hyperspace. Ex-Jedi Ahsoka Tano then teamed up with Sabine Wren to find their lost friend. The new Ahsoka series on Disney+ will find her on the hunt for Thrawn, and picks up on her recent appearances in The Mandalorian‘s second season.

Considering the source, this has to still be considered a rumor. If true, Lucasfilm and Disney will definitely announce it.

Comic-Con: ‘The Walking Dead: World Beyond’ Panel

Comic-Con Provides A First Look At the Conclusion of the Limited Walking Dead Spin-Off

Walking Dead

The Walking Dead universe continues to expand.  First, there was a spin-off with Fear The Walking Dead (about to start its 7th season this October), and then another spin-off series premiered last year The Walking Dead: World Beyond, which showcased a group of younger people that pretty much all they know if the zombie apocalypse.  Even though Iris (Aliyah Royale) and Hope (Alexa Mansour) lived pretty much-sheltered lives in the Omaha campus colony of the “Civic Republic” (the well-organized people who zipped Rick Grimes away in Season 8 of the OG show), destiny calls when they have to leave their sheltered life and search for their father who was held captive by the military wing of the authoritarian government: The Civic Republic Military (or CRM).  The first season of Walking Dead: World Beyond was “interesting” as it gave us a new outlook on the ever-expansive world of the zombie apocalypse.  The first season of the two-season limited series ended with Alex being taken away by the CRM and Hope vowing to fight and get her sister back to safety.  In anticipation of the upcoming second season, the cast and crew of the YA zombie show sat with Chris Hardwick for the Walking Dead: World Beyond panel at this year’s Comic-Con @Home.

After catching us up on the past season and showing a first-look clip in the aftermath of a CRM helicopter gone down and the survivors being eaten, we then see Felix’s (Nico Tortorella) boyfriend Will Campbell (Jelani Alladin) running from the CRM.  As he connects with Felix and Hope, we realize just how important he is to the CRM and why they are so gun-ho to take him out. Because Will has been on the run from the CRM, he has joined up with new survivors.  Not only is actor Jelani Alladin bumped up to series regular, but so have fellow actors Natalie Gold, Joe Holt, and Ted Sutherland for the second season of Walking Dead: World Beyond.

Executive producer Scott Gimple stated that because the limiter series is so focused on the evil Civic Republic, this season of Walking Dead: World Beyond will fill in some gaps from the other shows as they relate to the sinister government.  Gimple is quick to state that because all of The Walking Dead shows operate on different timelines, we probably won’t be having a crossover (and Gimple reiterated a few times that Rick Grimes won’t be on the show).

Cast members offered glimpses as to what will happen at the conclusion of the show, which will premiere on AMC on October 3rd at 10;00 PM.  Please take a look at the Walking Dead: World Beyond panel.
