Eiza Gonzalez To Play Mexican Screen Legend Maria Felix In Upcoming Biopic

We’re big fans of Eiza Gonzalez here, but the Baby Driver and Godzilla vs. Kong actress has yet to have that one big lead role all to herself. Well, that could be happening now as she’s set to play famed Mexican actress Maria Felix in an upcoming biopic.

Deadline reports Gonzalez will star in and exec-produce an untitled drama about Maria Felix, that comes with the full support of the Felix estate. Known as the “La Doña.”, Felix starred in 47 movies in multiple countries over the course of her thirty-year career. Her story finds her emerging from a rough childhood in Sonoa to becoming one of the most famous Latin performers in the world. She received France’s highest cultural honor Legion d’honneur, and became a fashion icon.

The film has yet to find a director, and a screenwriter of Latin-American origin is being sought. Here’s what Gonzalez had to say about the role:

“Maria’s tenacity and fierce way of living through some of the hardest adversity I’ve witnessed has inspired me and many more,” González said. “I’m incredibly honored to be playing her and to be bringing her voice and story to the world.”

Gonzalez has had a busy year already, having appeared in Godzilla vs. Kong, along with voicing a character in Spirit Untamed and debuting a new film Love Spreads at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Natalie Portman Exits ‘The Days Of Abandonment’, HBO Pulls The Plug

Natalie Portman to star in Lena Dunham's GOOD SEX

Announced just a few months ago, The Days of Abandonment was set to team up Oscar winner Natalie Portman with Novitiate director Maggie Betts. HBO boarded the project, as well, and this looked like it could be a major prestige picture for the network. Unfortunately, Portman has now dropped out and HBO has decided to just cut their losses.

According to Deadline, HBO Films has decided to pull the plug on The Days of Abandonment rather than recast Portman’s role. The film was to be an adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s bestselling novel about a woman who must pick up the pieces of her life when her husband of 15 years leaves her for someone younger.

Well, so much for that. Here’s HBO’s statement on the matter, which doesn’t provide a lot of detail:

“Due to unforeseen personal reasons, Natalie Portman has stepped down from HBO Films’ ‘Days of Abandonment’ prior to the start of filming,” HBO said. “Unfortunately, the production will not move forward. We are very sorry we won’t be able to bring this beautiful story to the screen with our talented writer/director and cast. We send our sincere thanks to our cast, producers, and crew for all their passion and hard work.”

Henry Cavill Reportedly Not Under Contract To Appear As Superman In Any DCEU Film

With different Superman projects in the works for Michael B. Jordan and JJ Abrams, you’d think we’d hear something about the status of Henry Cavill. He hasn’t played the Man of Steel since Justice League, and while reports have differed on his possible return, nothing is confirmed. One rumor had Cavill popping up in The Flash, but according to an update from Umberto Gonzalez of TheWrap, that’s not happening for a very good reason.

According to Gonzalez, Cavill isn’t under contract to appear as Superman in anything.

We probably shouldn’t be surprised by this. Cavill had been pegged for an appearance in Shazam: Fury of the Gods, following up on the tease at the first movie’s conclusion. That fell through, however, and we’ve heard little about Cavill being used anywhere. Even if there were more appearances left on his contract it doesn’t mean WB has to cast him, and it seems they are happy to let others play Superman.

‘Blue Beetle’ DCEU Film Eyes’ Cobra Kai’ Actor Xolo Maridueña To Play Jaime Reyes

It’s been slow going for Warner Bros.’ Blue Beetle movie, announced way back in 2018 and recently confirmed to be an HBO Max exclusive. As the first major superhero film featuring a Latino lead character, there are a lot of eyes on this one to make sure it’s done right. And now today comes word that Cobra Kai breakout Xolo Maridueña is in talks to star as Jaime Reyes.

The news comes from The Wrap, who don’t have a lot more to add at this point. Maridueña would take on the role of Mexican-American teen Jaime Reyes, the third person to don the Blue Beetle suit following longtime hero Ted Kord.

Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto will take the camera, working from a script by Mexican writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.

There have been other Latino heroes in the DCEU, but always in group settings. Sasha Calle was recently cast to play Supergirl in The Flash, and Rosie Perez was Renee Montoya in Birds of Prey. Not to mention Jay Hernandez played El Diablo in the 2016 Suicide Squad. Most recently, Dominican In the Heights actress Leslie Grace was cast to star in Batgirl, which will also be exclusive to HBO Max.

Maridueña has starred as Miguel Diaz in all three seasons of Netflix’s Cobra Kai, and also had a featured role on the series Parenthood. Blue Beetle would be his first big feature film role, and it’s a pretty good way to start.

Has Ryan Coogler Cast Another High Profile Atlantean For ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’?

NamorFeature

Rumors of Atlantis have been flying since Okoye briefed the Black Widow about earthquakes off the coast of Wakanda in Avengers: Endgame. It’s inevitable that Marvel’s Lord of the Seas shows up at some point and based off of the casting rumors we’ve heard it seems more and more like that point is going to be Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

A few weeks backs we posted the news that Tenoch Huerta had been cast in an unspecified villain role in the upcoming sequel, though the word on the street is that role is the VERY specific, it’s Namor the Sub-Mariner. Assuming it is Namor, he’s going to have his hands full with Wakanda, which is probably why he’s bringing some family with him.

Take this with a grain of salt, but Murphy’s Multiverse is reporting that Mabel Cadena, who’s worked solely in Spanish language film up to this point, has been cast as Namora, cousin to Namor. Apparently the two have been interacting on social media as of late, which certainly could be a sign that this rumor is correct, but there’s alot of variable’s there. Now, assuming this casting news is accurate, I can certainly see why she was cast. There’s most definitely a familial resemblance between the two.

So this leads to the question of what role will the Atlanteans play in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The only thing we REALLY know is that they will have to address the catastrophic loss of Chadwick Boseman, and therefore T’Challa, as the role is not being recast. I’ve learned long ago not to question the logic of Kevin Feige but it seems like a rough place to intro a new major player. Namor, being an anti-hero who begrudginly helps the Avengers from time to time but maintains his disdain for the “surface dwellers, would work perfectly as a character who debuts a villain and eventually turns hero, ala Loki. The thing is, If Namor, Namora, and the rest of the Atlantean army try and take Wakanda while they are weak from the loss of T’challa…well, that’s going to be a tough one to come back from given the impact Boseman’s performance had on so many.

Amazon’s ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Series Reveals First Look And Fall 2022 Release Date

Second breakfast is back!!! For the reported $1B cost of Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series, a second breakfast is the least that should come with it. The long-awaited, much talked-about show is coming…in a little over a year. But at least we know exactly when and have a first image to hold on to.

The Lord of the Rings will debut on September 2nd 2022 on Amazon Prime Video. The look that we get…well, it’s kinda dull. But we can see a caped figure staring off into a vast, distant land, possibly elven in construct, and it looks like something Peter Jackson would’ve done. I’m sure that was the point because Amazon needs fans of Jackson’s movies to watch this series, too.

EW says the photo is from the first episode, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this is in the First Age as a setup to what follows. We know the show will take place in the Second Age as the various clans of Middle Earth deal with the reemergence of evil, and we see the rise of Sauron thousands of years before events in JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

The large ensemble includes Robert Aramayo, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Owain Arthur, Ismael Cruz Cordova, and Morfydd Clark as Galadriel.  JA Bayona leads the trio of directors helming all eight episodes of the first season.

‘The Suicide Squad’ Clips: Blackguard’s An Idiot And Starro Is Unleashed

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad finally opens in theaters and HBO Max this Friday, and I can’t wait for you all to see it. Actually, I can’t wait to see it again myself. that’s how much fun it is.

Warner Bros. has dropped a couple of clips that will give you a pretty good idea what to expect, without spoiling too much. The first is more of a scene that has been prevalent in the promos, and it involves Pete Davidson as the comically-terrible Blackguard, freaking out when he thinks he’s sitting next to a werewolf, when in fact it’s just Weasel (played by Sean Gunn).

It’s also no secret that Task Force X is facing the might of Starro the Conqueror as the ultimate baddie. We see the creature in all of its glory in the second clip, as it escapes its confines and stomps like a kaiju through the island of Corto Maltese, where much of the film takes place.

The Suicide Squad opens on August 6th.

‘Together’ Trailer: James McAvoy And Sharon Horgan Are Tested By Lockdown In Stephen Daldry’s Latest

Let’s face it, movies about the pandemic shot during lockdown have been pretty bad, and sorta feel outdated, right? Well, there are still a select few worth keeping an eye out for, and one of those is Together. When the talents of James McAvoy, Military Wives actress Sharon Horgan, and director Stephen Daldry are involved we have to assume the best, right?

Penned by Dennis Kelly (Black Sea) and marking Daldry’s first film since Trash in 2014, Together follows a London couple who must endure being locked down together over the course of a year, and obviously, it puts their relationship to the test.

Daldry is a consummate actor’s filmmaker, having previously directed such acclaimed films as The Hours, The Reader, Extraordinarily Loud & Incredibly Close, and Billy Elliott, all noted for their performances. In other words, expect the best out of McAvoy and Horgan.

Together opens in theaters on August 27th.

Academy Award nominee Stephen Daldry’s new comedy, TOGETHER, starring James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan, is the story of a family, like so many, who found a way to survive – together. This hilarious and heartbreaking story intimately shows two partners forced to re-evaluate themselves and their relationship through the reality of lockdown.

Paramount Pulls ‘Clifford The Big Red Dog’ Theatrical Release Due To Rising COVID-19 Cases

Sit Clifford sit! Good dog! Paramount’s Clifford the Big Red Dog movie, which they just released a trailer for not too long ago, isn’t hitting theaters as expected. Due to the outbreak of the Delta variant of COVID-19, the studio has decided to pull the movie’s theatrical release on September 17th 2021.

If that’s depressing news, I feel ya. It’s not like Clifford was a movie I was especially looking forward to, but headlines like this should be a thing of the past. However, they’re slowly but surely coming back.

Clifford had been projecting well according to analysts, which makes this news doubly disappointing for Paramount. However, it’s not like the film was going to be a Marvel-sized blockbuster or anything, and there’s a good chance they will make it a Paramount+ streaming exclusive similar to Infinite. If families are staying home, and they were eager to see this movie, then they’ll pay to watch it at home. [Deadline]
