‘Mainstream’ Trailer: Maya Hawke And Andrew Garfield Find Internet Fame In Gia Coppola’s New Satire

When your last name is Coppola and you get into the movie business, suffice it to say all eyes will be on you. For Gia Coppola, the granddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola and niece of Sofia and Roman Coppola, she made an impressive directorial debut in 2013 with Palo Alto. That film had quite the cast of rising young stars, too, and now she’s gathered another great group for her followup, Mainstream.

Maya Hawke (Stranger Things), Nat Wolff (Paper Towns), Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man), Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore), Alexa Demie (Euphoria), and Johnny Knoxville (Jackass) star, along with appearances by Jake Paul and Charles Melton star in the film which takes a satirical look at Internet celebrity and the dark side of fame.

Response to the film out of Venice was polarizing from what I can remember, with a lot of the attention on Garfield’s over-the-top performance.

Frankly, this looks obnoxious to me, but Coppola is a talented filmmaker and it deserves a chance to impress.

Mainstream opens in select theaters an VOD on May 7th.

MAINSTREAM follows a young woman (Maya Hawke) who thinks she’s found a path to internet stardom when she starts making YouTube videos with a charismatic stranger (Andrew Garfield) – until the dark side of viral celebrity threatens to ruin them both.

In today’s social media-focused society: what constitutes popularity, how do we struggle to be creative in a modern age of “cool,” what is it like growing up with a social media presence. MAINSTREAM will leave you analyzing your relationship with social media while acting as a cautionary fairytale about what our culture values and the psychological dangers that can come with it. Featuring appearances from some of today’s most prominent social media stars, including Patrick Starrr and Jake Paul.

‘Without Remorse’ Trailer: Michael B. Jordan Is Out For Vengeance In Amazon’s New Clancy Thriller

Amazon is going all-in on the Tom Clancy-verse. With the success of their Jack Ryan series starring John Krasinski, they’re now heavily pushing the Hell out of Without Remorse, which has Michael B. Jordan playing the author’s popular badass soldier, John Clark.

The film is an origin story for John Kelly aka John Clark, a Navy Seal who uncovers a vast conspiracy while seeking justice for the murder of his pregnant wife by Russian agents. Clark is basically considered the flipside to Ryan, showing more of a dark side and a willingness to use lethal force. You get a taste of that in this new trailer.

Behind the camera is Stefano Sollima (Sicario: Day of the Soldado) from a script co-written by Taylor Sheridan (Hell or High Water), so you know it’ll be all muscular and stuff. Jordan is joined by Jamie Bell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Luke Mitchell, Jack Kesy, Brett Gelman, Colman Domingo, and Guy Pearce.

Without Remorse hits Amazon Prime on April 30th. How long until we get the Clark/Ryan crossover?

Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse, or simply Without Remorse, is an upcoming American action thriller film starring Michael B. Jordan directed by Stefano Sollima and written by Taylor Sheridan and Will Staples. It is based on the 1993 novel of the same name by Tom Clancy and a spin-off of the Jack Ryan film series. The film tells the origin story of John Kelly (aka John Clark), a U.S. Navy SEAL, who uncovers an international conspiracy while seeking justice for the murder of his pregnant wife by Russian soldiers. When Kelly joins forces with fellow SEAL Karen Greer and shadowy CIA agent Robert Ritter, the mission unwittingly exposes a covert plot that threatens to engulf the U.S. and Russia in an all-out war.

‘Monster’ Trailer: Kelvin Harrison Jr., Jeffrey Wright, Nas, John David Washington & More Star In Netflix’s Legal Drama

If your film tastes are anything like mine, and I wager that’s the case for at least some of you, all you need to know about Netflix’s upcoming drama Monster is this: the cast consists of Kelvin Harrison Jr., Jennifer Hudson, Jeffrey Wright, Jharrel Jerome, Jennifer Ehle, Rakim Mayers, Nasir ‘Nas’ Jones, Tim Blake Nelson, and John David Washington.

Check please. Just give it to me.

So how does a film with this much talent fly under the radar? Well, it could be a couple of things. First, it’s on Netflix and a lot of movies get buried under the deluge of content they have. Second, it actually premiered three years ago at Sundance, and honestly, I have ZERO recollection of it. This is definitely a movie I would’ve sought out, and that tells me something. I hope I’m wrong because it looks really good.

Monster marks the directorial debut of Anthony Handler, a music video director with a lot of stroke, clearly. Here’s the synopsis:

Monster tells the story of Steve Harmon (Kelvin Harrison, Jr.) a seventeen-year-old honor student whose world comes crashing down around him when he is charged with felony murder. The film follows his dramatic journey from a smart, likeable film student from Harlem attending an elite high school through a complex legal battle that could leave him spending the rest of his life in prison.

Netflix will debut Monster on May 7th.

‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’: James Gunn Confirms Filming Later This Year

There was a long stretch when it seemed we might not get Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Or, at least not one that had James Gunn attached to it. He had departed Marvel and taken on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros./DC Films, but fortunately for us, he’s back and we might be seeing the Guardians in action very soon.

Gunn confirmed via Twitter that shooting on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will begin later this year.

Let’s not forget there will be multiple chances to see the Guardians in action. Much of the cast will have a role in Thor: Love & Thunder, since the last we saw of the Asgardian thunder god he was blasting off into space alongside them. Plus, we have the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special on Disney+ to look forward to. For the Distinguished Competition, Gunn has a Peacemaker spinoff series on HBO Max so he’s going to be quite the busy guy.

So it looks as if the wrap-up to Gunn’s trilogy will arrive in 2023 as planned.

Thandiwe Newton Is Going Back To Her Original Name: “I’m Taking Back What’s Mine”

This is just weird. Ever since her feature debut in the 1991 film Flirting, we’ve known her as Thandie Newton. But that, it turns out, was always a mistake, one she has lived with for 30 years. A misspelling altered her actual name, Thandiwe Newton, and now the actress is reclaiming the original spelling she had long ignored.

“That’s my name. It’s always been my name. I’m taking back what’s mine,” Newton told British Vogue. Thandiwe, which means “beloved” in Shona, talked about representation in Hollywood and how advancements have helped drive her to make this decision…

“The thing I’m most grateful for in our business right now is being in the company of others who truly see me. And to not be complicit in the objectification of Black people as ‘others,’ which is what happens when you’re the only one,” Newton said.

It’s not on me to judge Newton for any of this, but I freak out now when somebody misspells my name on a Chyron or something. I can’t imagine going years without telling people to get my damn name right. Apparently, the decision wasn’t necessarily made to make herself more marketable in Hollywood, which is what actors do all of the time when they change their names willingly. Whatever the case, the good news is Newton feels comfortable enough now to be completely herself. That’s a positive no matter what.

Newton also talks about past sexual abuse she faced in the early part of her career, and the fight she and Westworld co-star Evan Rachel Wood waged for equal pay. It’s a good interview and you should check it out.

‘Chucky’ Teaser’: The ‘Child’s Play’ Franchise Returns To Murderous Life On The Small Screen

The Child’s Play franchise is unique among the horror genre. Not for being unnaturally long-lived or anything, but for diverging into two separate ongoing franchises. A reboot in 2019 led to a split, where the original storyline, characters, and even the actors would head to the small screen. And now we have a new teaser for Chucky, which tells us it’s time to be reunited with an old friend…who probably wants to murder us.

Production has only just begun on the show, which is why there’s no actual footage in this teaser. However, what we do get is a look at the animatronic insides of ol’ Chucky, so at least we know he won’t be some crappy CG creation.

Chucky arrives on SyFy from original franchise co-creator Don Mancini, joined by the original Chucky voice actor Brad Dourif. He’s joined by Jennifer Tilly, back voicing Tiffany Valenine, Fiona Dourif who returns as Nica Pierce, and new additions Devon Sawa, Zackary Arthur, Teo Briones, Bjorgvin Arnarson, Alyvia Alyn Lind, Lexa Doig (Arrow), and Barbara Alyn Woods.

“An idyllic American town is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town’s hypocrisies and secrets. Meanwhile, the arrival of enemies — and allies — from Chucky’s past threatens to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll’s untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster.”

Get Hyped! Bill Murray Gives A Glowing Review Of The ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Story

bill murray

He’s probably one of the world’s most beloved celebrities but Bill Murray hasn’t exactly been loving through the years when talking about Ghostbusters, the film that launched him to super-stardom. He’d say crappy things, and we would laugh and say “oh, that Bill”, he’s notoriously hard to work with yet we all love him, because….simply put, he is who he is and he’s respected for that.

So why the semi-insulting intro? Well without that what’s to come loses some of it’s luster. Murray was attending (virtually) the Santa Barbara Film Festival, where he was being awarded the Maltin Modern Master Award, when the subject of Ghostbusters: Afterlife came up. Surprisingly Bill Murray was fully positive on the subject of the upcoming film. Rumor has it that the movie is going to be a bit of a tear jerker, especially when it comes to the late Harold Ramis, who’s legacy features heavily in the films plot. This may have something to do with Murray’s take, but I never really took him for the sentimental type. The praise was mostly heaped on Jason Reitman (son of the original Ghostbusters director, Ivan Reitman), and the story he put together with Murray saying:

“…he had a really, really wonderful idea that he wrote with another wonderful guy that I got to work with, Gil Kenan”

and

“I think he’s really got something,”

Again, considering the source this is a glowing review. While we should have been able to judge for ourselves almost a year ago, with the original release date set in June 2020, COVID had other plans. We still have a way to go, with the new release date set for Fall 2021. When the time finally comes I’ll be glad for the date change, when else should you release a Ghostbusters film but around Halloween?

‘Star Trek: Picard’ Season 2 Trailer Has A Major Character Making Their Long-Awaited Comeback

Today is #FirstContactDay, which is basically the Star Trek answer to Star Wars Day. It’s a way of promoting all things Star Trek, and since Paramount+ is basically the only place where you can see the franchise right now, that makes this the perfect time for a teaser of Star Trek: Picard season 2, which arrives next year. What’s been happening in it? To Hell if I know! But I do know one of my all-time favorite characters named after a letter in the alphabet is returning.

No, it’s not Mr. T.  You know it’s the immortal being Q who  is coming back for the second season of Picard season 2, with John de Lancie taking on the role again. How will he make Picard’s life miserable this time? Well, as he says in the new teaser, “The trial never ends.”  I guess he’ll be doing this to poor Jean-luc until the day the old guy dies, and probably beyond.

‘Borderlands’: Edgar Ramirez Joins Star-Studded Video Game Film As Atlas

Damn. Borderlands really is about to have the best cast ever for a video game movie, isn’t it? Deadline reports Edgar Ramirez is the latest to join up for Eli Roth’s adaptation, which already features Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Haley Bennett.

Ramirez will be taking on the role of Atlas, a business titan and the most powerful man in the universe. In the Borderlands games, there’s an Atlas Corporation which manufactures weapons and we can probably assume he’ll be the head of it in the movie. Here’s how the film is described:

In the movie Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful S.O.B., Atlas (Ramirez). Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team – Roland (Hart), a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis (Curtis), the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity; and Claptrap (Black), a persistently wiseass robot. These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other. Based on the game from Gearbox and 2K, one of the bestselling videogame franchises of all time, welcome to Borderlands.

Borderlands has a script by Emmy winner Craig Mazin.

Ramirez was most recently seen opposite Jennifer Garner in the Netflix comedy Yes Day. He also has the female-led spy flick The 355 coming up, as well as Disney’s Jungle Cruise with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.

New ‘Army Of The Dead’ Poster Teases Zack Snyder’s Colorful Zombie Heist Film

Okay, we done talking about Zack Snyder’s Justice League now? Good, because he’s got another film on the way that looks even better. A colorful new poster has been released for Army of the Dead, teasing the neon-flavored casino setting and cast led by Dave Bautista.

A Las Vegas that is ground zero for a zombie outbreak is the setting for Army of the Dead, which finds Bautista leading a band of mercenaries into the city for an insane heist. Also pictures on the poster are , Ella Purnell, Matthias Schweighöfer, Omari Hardwick and Ana de la Reguera, which suggests they are the main crew we’ll be following. Also in the cast are Tig Notaro, Theo Rossi, Nora Arnezeder, Hiroyuki Sanada, Samantha Win, Huma Qureshi, and Garret Dillahunt.

This is becoming a pretty big undertaking, too. Netflix is keen on turning Army of the Dead into a major franchise, with an anime series and a live-action prequel that will center on Schweighöfer’s character, Ludwig Dieter.

Army of the Dead hits Netflix on May 21st.
