Oscar season is drawing to a close. How do we know? Because last night was the 37th Independent Spirit Awards, once again hosted by Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally. If there was a film that emerged with a ton of momentum of the show, it was a film with three Oscar nominations, none of them for Best Picture: Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Lost Daughter.
Scoring big wins for Best Feature, Director, and Screenplay, The Lost Daughter more than made up for the lack of Picture and Director noms at the Oscars. It’s also quite the feather in the cap of Gyllenhaal in her feature debut, setting her up as a filmmaker to watch for the long haul.
The leader in nominations, Zola, didn’t fare quite as well. Despite leading all with seven total nominations, the Twitter thread dramedy scored wins Taylour Paige for Best Actress, along with an Editing award.
Other key victories include Ruth Negga for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Passing, Oscar frontrunner Troy Kotsur in Best Supporting for CODA, Simon Rex won Best Male Lead for Red Rocket.
