‘Hypnotic’ Trailer: Kate Siegel Stars In Netflix’s Hypnotherapy Horror

Halloween season is here, and there will be no shortage of horror films for you to choose from. Netflix will be going deep on the genre, as they always do, and one that fans of spooky stuff have to look forward to is Hypnotic, a Portland-set horror starring Kate Siegel who has been integral to the success of her husband, The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass director Mike Flanagan.

Hypnotic isn’t directed by Flanagan, however. Behind the camera are Suzanne Coote and Matt Angel, working from a script by Ricard D’Ovidio. The cast finds Siegel starring alongside Jason O’Mara and Dulé Hill. Coote and Angel previously directed another Netflix horror, 2018’s The Open House.

Here’s the synopsis:  “Feeling stuck both personally and professionally, Jenn (Kate Siegel), a young woman reeling from a series of traumatic events, enlists a renowned hypnotherapist, Dr. Meade (Jason O’Mara), to help on her road to recovery. After a handful of intense sessions, terrifying events, and mysterious blackouts, Jenn soon finds herself caught in a dangerous mind game. With the help of Detective Wade Rollins (Dulé Hill), Jen looks to put the pieces together before it’s too late and there are deadly consequences.”

Netflix will debut Hypnotic on October 27th.

Kristen Stewart Says She And Steven Yeun Are Starring In A Sci-Fi Love Story

The buzz surrounding Kristen Stewart’s performance in Spencer is building, and there’s a good chance she’ll be an Oscar nominee when all is said and done. That actually puts even more attention on what comes next for her, and according to Stewart that’s a sci-fi movie with Minari star Steven Yeun.

Speaking with EW, Stewart talked about wrapping up on David Cronenberg’s latest, Crime of the Century. That will be followed by an untitled sci-fi love story with Yeun. No info on who will write or direct just yet.

“It’s actually a love story between a satellite and a buoy; it’s hard to explain. I hope I don’t botch it because it’s a really revolutionarily written script”, Stewart said.

Yeun is coming off an Oscar nomination in the Best Actor category for his performance in Minari. Before that, he earned acclaim for his role in Burning, and of course, The Walking Dead. The pairing of him and Stewart could be incredible, but given her glowing words about the script I can’t wait to find out who is behind it.

Marvel’s ‘Blade’ Release Date May Have Been Leaked…Or It’s A Mistake

BLADE may have finally been scrapped by Marvel

Um, oops? Marvel’s generally pretty good about the announcements they make regarding their upcoming films. But this time their officer Marvel India Twitter account may have made a mistake regarding Blade, starring Mahershala Ali.

In a quickly-deleted tweet, Marvel India placed Blade among a group of upcoming releases, set for October 7th 2022. The rest of the dates for the other films, such a Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, The Marvels, Thor: Love & Thunder, etc., are on point. So it stands to reason Blade is, too, right? Nothing has been confirmed, however, and like I said, the tweet was pulled. It all might be a miscommunication, or somebody at Marvel India jumped the gun. That’s what I think happened.

Oscar winner Mahershala Ali was announced to star as Blade a couple of years ago, but there was very little movement on it until recently when Mogul Mowgli director Bassam Tariq came aboard. There remains hope that the original Blade, Wesley Snipes, will have a role somehow.

‘Operation Mincemeat’ Trailer: Colin Firth Is A Master Of Deception In John Madden’s New WWII Drama

Colin Firth has starred in his share of war films, including Sam Mendes’ 1917, and now he’s taking on another with Operation Mincemeat. Believe it or not, the title, which sounds like something out of a horror movie, is based on an actual plot by the Allied forces during WWII to disguise their invasion of Sicily. The scheme involved planting fake evidence of a mission on a dead body made to look like a fictitious Royal Army commander. It’s the stuff of movies, for sure, and now it is one.

Firth plays British naval officer Ewen Montagu, who came up with the plan. He’s joined by Kelly Macdonald, Matthew Macfadyen, Penelope Wilton, Jason Isaacs, Tom Wilkinson, Simon Russell Beale, and Johnny Flynn as James Bond creator Ian Fleming who was a prominent naval officer himself. The late Paul Ritter also makes his final screen performance.

The film is directed by John Madden, best known for Shakespeare in Love and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Michelle Ashford, who wrote acclaimed HBO war series The Pacific, penned the screenplay so you know this film is incredibly well researched.

Operation Mincemeat opens in the UK in January 2022, with a stateside release through Netflix to follow.

‘Violet’ Trailer: Olivia Munn Battles Her Inner Voice In Justin Bateman’s Directorial Debut

For her directorial debut, Violet, Justine Bateman isn’t taking the easy route with some softball rom-com or coming-of-age drama. The film stars Olivia Munn as a hard-working exec in the movie business as she struggles with anxiety in a business dominated by white men. While that may sound like something we’ve seen before, the way Bateman presents it is something different.

As seen in the trailer for Violet, Munn’s character keeps all of her insecurities bottled up inside, presenting herself as cool and confident. But her inner monologue, which sounds like Justin Theroux because it is him, is preventing her from moving forward. She can’t keep it locked away forever.

Also in the cast are Laura San Giacomo, Luke Bracey, Jason Dohring, Zachary Gordon, Erica Ash, Steve Agee, Rain Phoenix, Colleen Camp, and more. Bateman, who most still know from her role in classic ’80s sitcom Family Ties, also wrote the script.

I saw the film at SXSW earlier this year and while lukewarm on it, I did find it to be “a fascinating mess, one with valuable insights on mental health, female objectification, sexism, and more.”

Violet gets a limited release in theaters on October 29th, followed by VOD on November 9th.

A Los Angeles–based film executive, Violet has worked arduously to gain status in an industry still dominated by older white men, often at the expense of her dignity and taste. Nowhere is this more apparent than in her relationship with her boss, who exerts his power by regularly humiliating her in front of clients. Violet presents as confident, chilly, even callous, but inside her, a cauldron of desperate anxieties is on the brink of boiling over.

‘Peacemaker’ Clip Has John Cena Striking Fear In The Hearts Of Nobody

John Cena as Peacemaker

We might be looking at James Gunn’s takeover of the DCEU. While he probably won’t be given the same level of creative control that Zack Snyder once held, Gunn is clearly staking his claim on the DC Universe characters following The Suicide Squad. Not only does he have a brand new, still unknown project in the works, but his HBO Max series Peacemaker is coming and will be teased next week at DC FanDome.

But first, a clip from Peacemaker has arrived and it’s damned hilarious. John Cena returns as the Suicide Squad team’s most psychotic character, which is saying something. In this clip, we see him arrive to a diner meeting in full bucket helmet and colorful outfit, earning all of the jokes they rightfully deserve. Um, he also has a pet eagle. In the backseat of his car.

Also seen in this clip are The Suicide Squad co-stars Steve Agee and Jennifer Holland as John Economos and Emilia Harcourt, who pissed off Amanda Waller in that film, thus earning this shit assignment. Also seen are Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo and Chukwudi Iwuji as Clemson Murn.

Peacemaker hits HBO Max in January 2022!

‘House Of The Dragon’ Teaser: HBO’s New ‘Game Of Thrones’ Spinoff Arrives Next Year

“Dreams didn’t make us kings. Dragons did.”

And with that, the first teaser for HBO’s highly anticipated Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon, is here. Whatever you thought of how the previous show concluded, this one promises a different Westeros experience in a completely different time.

The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood novel, and centers on House Targaryen 200 years prior to events in A Song of Ice and Fire. The biggest names included, and teased in this footage are Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, and Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.

HBO has added a few new names to the cast, Will Johnson as Ser Vaemond Velaryon, John Macmillan as Ser Laenor Velaryon, Savannah Steyn as Lady Laena Velaryon, and Theo Nate as Laenor Velaryon.

There isn’t much revealed here, especially for a Game of Thrones noob like myself, but the swordfighting and dragon teases are plentiful. Plus the cast is stellar.

House of the Dragon hits HBO next year.

‘Red Rocket’ Trailer: Simon Rex Is A Washed-Up Texas Porn Star In Sean Baker’s New Film

As Middleburg Film Festival approaches, there’s one movie at the top of my must-see list. Sean Baker’s Red Rocket, his followup to my favorite film of 2017, The Florida Project, is another exploration of America’s marginalized. And while that might not sound like a lot of fun, Baker’s films always are even as they are also incredibly insightful.

Simon Rex stars as the titular washed-up porn star who returns to his Texas roots where he’s not exactly received warmly. The question is whether he can keep walking the path of the angels, or…well, not.

The film made its world premiere at Cannes where it competed for the Palme d’Or, and has been making the festival circuit ever since. Like I said, it’ll be at Middleburg next week (You should get tickets) and I’m hyped.

Red Rocket opens in theaters on December 3rd and that date is no coincidence. A24 clearly has awards hopes behind this one.

‘The End’: Tilda Swinton, George MacKay, Stephen Graham To Star In Post-Apocalyptic Musical From ‘The Act Of Killing’ Director

Joshua Oppenheimer is known for his two unforgettable documentaries on the nature and legacy of violence, The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence. He hasn’t directed anything since, however, and now he’s returning with his first narrative feature, and surprisingly it’s a musical starring Tilda Swinton, Stephen Graham, and George MacKay.

NEON has announced they’ve acquired the rights to The End, and while details are scarce it already sounds interesting. The film will star Swinton, Graham, and MacKay in a “golden age musical about the last human family”.

What does that mean? Is this some post-apocalyptic scenario? Perhaps all that’s left in the world are robots except for these people? Who knows? I’m intrigued, especially since this is a genre Oppenheimer’s never done before as a feature.

The cast Oppenheimer has put together is excellent, too. Swinton will be seen next in The French Dispatch, and recently shot George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing. She’s currently filming Wes Anderson’s new film in Spain. Graham can be seen right now as Detective Mulligan in Venom: Let There Be Carnage. MacKay is best known for his incredible performance in 1917, and will be seen in Wolf later this year.

Production on The End begins in early 2022.

James Gunn Plans To Introduce “One Of The Greatest MCU Characters” In His ‘GOTG Holiday Special’

James Gunn has Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 coming up for Marvel, and it’s likely to be his final outing for the MCU. However, he’s just given us reason to be more excited for the GOTG Holiday Special for Disney+, with the promise of a new character that he clearly thinks is pretty dope!

Well damn, let the speculation begin! My fingers are crossed that it’s either Nova, the Rich Ryder version, or Adam Warlock. Yes, I know Adam Warlock’s cocoon has been seen before, in Guardians of the Galaxy no less, but he hasn’t formally been introduced. Let’s make it happen!
