Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be for Utopia. After a failed attempt to get going at HBO with David Fincher on board, the series was picked up by Amazon Prime and ran for just one season, with word coming today that it’s been canceled.
Utopia certainly had a ton of buzz behind it, which isn’t surprising given the talent involved. The series was written by Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn, based on a popular UK series about a group of misfits hunted by a shadowy government when they uncover a graphic novel that can predict future catastrophes. The series starred John Cusack, Rainn Wilson, Desmin Borges, Dan Byrd, Ashleigh LaThrop, Jessica Rothe, Javon Walton, Christopher Denham, Cory Michael Smith, Sasha Lane and Farrah Mackenzie.
Reviews were generally good, and this might be a case of a huge show that just didn’t draw like Amazon hoped for. They’ve got enough huge, expensive projects coming up that they don’t need to hold on to this one. And if subscribers are eager for something with a sci-fi flavor, there are better options available. *cough The Expanse cough*
