Andy Serkis is hoping to restore the magic of Lord of the Rings on the big screen, and what better way to do that than to bring back the most powerful mage in all of Middle-Earth? Back in May, we learned that Serkis would direct and star in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, and now we know an old friend will be joining him.
Speaking with The Big Issue, Ian McKellen confirmed that he’ll be coming back as Gandalf in The Hunt for Gollum, although he doesn’t know much about it yet.
“Enthusiasm for ‘The Lord of the Rings’ shows no sign of abating,” said McKellen. “I can’t tell you any more than that. I’ve just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved and they hope that I’ll be playing him.”
He continued, “When? I don’t know. What the script is? It’s not written yet. So, they better be quick.”
As McKellen said, the script isn’t finished yet, but with a planned 2026 release date the writers better get on it quickly. The old band really is coming back together for this one. Peter Jackson is aboard as a producer, while the script is being written by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.
It’s a great time to be a Tolkien fan with Prime Video’s The Rings of Power currently airing its second season. There’s also a new animated film,The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, arriving later this year.
