“One dollar to rule them all…”
Warner Bros. revealed last year that more Lord of the Rings movies were on the way, and today CEO David Zaslav has announced the new film will be titled The Lord of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum and arrive in 2026. Not only that, but it will see the return of Andy Serkis who will direct and reprise his role as Gollum.
There’s more, because Peter Jackson, who directed the previous six Middle-Earth movies to gigantic box office, is aboard as producer. His creative partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens will co-write the screenplay. Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, writers of the upcoming animated film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, also helped with the script. Zaslav said the film will “explore storylines yet to be told.”
In an official statement, Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens said, “It is an honor and a privilege to travel back to Middle-earth with our good friend and collaborator, Andy Serkis, who has unfinished business with that Stinker-Gollum! As lifelong fans of Professor Tolkien’s vast mythology, we are proud to be working with Mike De Luca, Pam Abdy, and the entire team at Warner Bros. on another epic adventure!”
This will be the biggest project yet for Serkis the filmmaker. He worked 2nd unit on The Hobbit movies, before moving on to solo directing Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, and the underrated drama Breathe. He has an adaptation of Animal Farm that’s expected to arrive next year.
