Even before Hustlers became a smash hit for Jennifer Lopez and STX, they were already looking to stay in business together. Last summer, Lopez sought to make her directorial debut with The Godmother, in which she’d play Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco. That film is now moving forward, and while Lopez won’t be directing, one can hardly argue with who may be taking over.
Reed Morano, who recently directed action-thriller The Rhythm Section, I Think We’re Alone Now, and episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale, is in talks to direct Lopez in The Godmother. Lopez will be Griselda Blanco, aka “The Cocaine Godmother”, head of the Medellín Cartel and leader in the Miami cocaine trade of the 1980s through the 2000s.
The script was originally written by Regina Corrado (Deadwood: The Movie) and Terence Winter (The Sopranos), but will get a rewrite by William Monahan, Oscar-winning writer of The Departed.
So there’s talent all over the place here, and a role that promises Lopez another fierce performance. Whether this one will get her on the Oscar stage, as Hustlers surprisingly failed to do, is something we’ll have to wait and see. [Deadline]

Fans walk under a Comic-Con logo on day 1 of the 2014 Comic-Con International Convention held in San Diego
2014 Comic-Con - Atmosphere, San Diego, USA - 24 Jul 2014
There will be no cosplay, no long lines stretching for miles, no overpriced exclusives in San Diego this summer. Comic-Con is officially canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak. The decision to cancel was announced just minutes ago in released statement, marking the first time in half a century the event will not take place. It was originally set to begin on July 23rd.
“For the first time in its 50-year history San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC), the organizers behind the annual pop culture celebration, announced today with deep regret that there will be no Comic-Con in 2020. The event will instead return to the San Diego Convention Center from July 22-25, 2021.”
“Recognizing that countless attendees save and plan for its conventions each year, and how many exhibitors and stakeholders rely upon its events for a major portion of their livelihood, they had hoped to delay this decision in anticipation that COVID-19 concerns might lessen by summer. Continuous monitoring of health advisories and recent statements by the Governor of California have made it clear that it would not be safe to move forward with plans for this year.”
Those who already purchased badges will have options, including a refund. An email will be sent to all badge holders shortly.
This move surprises absolutely no one, although organizers held out for as long as humanly possible. Even as plans are being put in place to reopen businesses, it will be slow going and the economic recovery will take many months. Comic-Con doesn’t fit into that plan, although this will be a huge financial blow to the city of San Diego, which stands to lose nearly $100M in revenue.
Artemis Fowl has been on a long and winding road, and could be argued is past its freshness date. An adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s book series about a boy super-genius/criminal mastermind in a world of magic, the film has been in development since around 2003, or at the height of the Harry Potter craze. Seventeen years later, and now in the hands of Disney, it was finally due to hit theaters next month after multiple delays. Then the pandemic happened, and we learned it would instead go straight to Disney+.
A new trailer confirms Artemis Fowl will be exclusive to Disney+ beginning June 12th. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the cast includes Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Josh Gad, Tamara Smart, Nonso Anozie, Colin Farrell, Judi Dench (with fairy ears!!!), Josh McGuire, Nikesh Patel, Adrian Scarborough, and Miranda Raison.
SYNOPSIS: Disney’s “Artemis Fowl,” is a fantastical, spellbinding adventure that follows the journey of 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl, a descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds, as he seeks to find his father who has mysteriously disappeared
With the help of his loyal protector Butler, Artemis sets out to find him, and in doing so uncovers an ancient, underground civilization—the amazingly advanced world of fairies. Deducing that his father’s disappearance is somehow connected to the secretive, reclusive fairy world, cunning Artemis concocts a dangerous plan—so dangerous that he ultimately finds himself in a perilous war of wits with the all-powerful fairies.
When Tom Hooper’s ultimately-disastrous Cats was first announced, I think the assumption was that the greatest showman himself, Hugh Jackman, would find his way into it. I mean, why wouldn’t he? He’s found plenty of success with Hooper in the past, and Jackman is one Hell of a multi-talented entertainer. Well, turns out he was asked, and his response is pretty great.
Speaking with The Daily Beast, Jackman gave a very simple, to-the-point answer when asked if he turns down a role in Cats…
“Umm… yep.”
Of course, the interviewer, who was really digging for a quote of Jackman crapping on the movie, pressed forward and asked what Jellicle he might’ve played…
“You know, Tom rang me early on because we did Les Mis together, and there were a couple of options there based on availability and time, and I really… yeah, I just wasn’t available at the time.”
Jackman dodged a bullet there, although he might’ve made that movie a lot better. It couldn’t have been worse, could it?
Anyway, as I mentioned above, the interviewer was quote-whoring hard here, but Jackman was not about to trash Hooper or the movie he made…
“I’m in the theater, man, and I don’t want to be in the business of bashing people—or jumping on bandwagons. I haven’t seen it, and Tom Hooper’s one of the great filmmakers we have.”
We can agree to disagree about Hooper being a great filmmaker, but I do respect Jackman’s professionalism. Perhaps he’s just waiting for the sequel and the inevitable (hopeful?) butthole cut.
Despite the daily news about postponed release dates and delayed productions, deals keep getting made around Hollywood. And J.J. Abrams has struck a big one with multiple shows coming to HBO Max: one an original concept penned by Abrams himself, another set in the universe of Stephen King’s The Shining, and the third, interestingly, is one based on Justice League Dark.
So the Justice League Dark series is the one that catches my eye, because it’s a property Warner Bros. has been fiddling with for years. The team of paranormal heroes was originally meant to come to the big screen courtesy of Guillermo Del Toro, but that ended up on the massive waste pile of unproduced projects the director always has. Doug Liman also took a stab at it, but the team eventually got its due in animated form. The roster includes such supernatural characters as Deadman, John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Madame Zanadu, and Zatanna, although the membership tends to shift.
The big question is if this will be part of the DCEU. As a stickler for continuity, let’s hope so.
The original concept series is titled Duster, and will be co-written by Abrams and LaToya Morgan. Set in the 1970s, it involves the getaway driver for a growing crime syndicate in the Southwest.
The third reunites Abrams with Stephen King, the two previously collaborating on Hulu’s Castle Rock. This new show is titled Overlook, and will center on characters from King’s The Shining, exploring new and terrifying stories from the infamous hotel. Perhaps we will see some further connection to the excellent sequel film Doctor Sleep?
Behind Youfollows Sisters Olivia (Addy Miller) and Claire (Elizabeth Birkner) who have had their world turned upside down. Their mother has just died, and their father is unreachable, somewhere out of the country. Naturally, a friend of their mother’s Camilla (Aimee-Lynn Chadwick) thinks it is best for them to be with family. Camilla brings the girls to live with their estranged aunt Beth (Jan Broberg) and from the jump things seem off.
Beth doesn’t even come out to greet the girls, her friend Charles (Philip Brodie) does so instead. When Beth does finally meet them, her first thought is to convince Camilla to take them instead. Unfortunately for everyone involved, Camilla refuses and the sisters must stay. Beth gives them a tour of the house, complete with the oft-seen locked basement door that of course immediately peaks Claire’s interest.
What the girls don’t know, and what the audience is privy to, is some of the history of the house. When Beth was a child, a malevolent entity attacked Beth’s sister Angela through a mirror. In what some would say is an appropriate reaction, Beth has either removed or covered the mirrors throughout the house.
Olivia stumbles upon this discovery by noticing some paper covering up a mirror in a bathroom. As she begins to tear the paper away, the evil within the house reveals itself. Luckily for Olivia, it is only interested in Claire and she leaves the room unharmed. Claire is tricked into going in the basement by the spirit impersonating her faithful stuffed rabbit. In the basement she finds mirrors covered with sheets and lit up by mysterious red backlighting. A candle lights itself, which is never a good sign, but somehow Claire doesn’t seem to mind. The spirit continues to manipulate Claire until she gives it the opportunity to cross into our world and wreak havoc.
The best parts of Behind You are the eerie pacing and slow, creepy stylistic elements. Andrew Mecham and Matthew Whedon, who both wrote and directed the film, did a great job building up suspense and a feeling of dread. Through a mix of spine-chilling music and deafening silence – where every creak and noise is magnified – to camera angles that leave the audience holding it’s breath as the camera slowly pans across a room, there is a lot to like.
The problem is, most of these are in the first half. The second half of the film replaces the ominous tone and masterful buildup with brashness and in-your-face jump scares and violence. Subtly can be king, and more of it in the second half of Behind You would have only been a benefit. It seems like a switch is flipped and suddenly we’re left with a completely different film in front of us.
Even with some standout moments in the first half, when the dust settles Behind You is just not memorable enough. It has a bunch of cliché horror elements – creepy house with a mysterious past, demons, mirrors being gateways for evil, and that evil focusing on one child. The problem is we’ve seen these time and time again and Behind You does not add enough to the mix to separate it from its predecessors. You can go ahead and leave Behind You covered with a sheet and locked in the basement; you aren’t missing much.
Lucasfilm always keeps mum about upcoming projects, but they’ve been especially quiet about Cassian Andor. What we do know is that Diego Luna will reprise his Rogue One role as the rebel intelligence officer, and of course, it serves as a prequel given that movie’s finale. Well, we’re finally getting an update with two new additions to the cast, including someone who has a home in another Disney cinematic universe.
Variety reports Stellan Skarsgard and Kyle Soller are joining the Cassian Andor cast. What else do we know? Nothing, really. They join Luna, as well as Alan Tudyk as Andor’s droid sidekick K-2SO. The Disney+ spy thriller will take place around the birth of the rebellion against the evil Empire.
Skarsgard is a known commodity to Marvel fans, having played Dr. Selvig in multiple movies. He’s been a great actor for decades, and was recently seen on the small-screen in HBO’s Chernobyl. Soller is less familiar, but he’s got impressive credits in The Keeping Room, 2018’s sci-fi flick The Titan, and horror Marrowbone where he first came to my attention. That’s an underrated movie, by the way, and worth checking out.
Production delays have made a release date for Cassian Andor a bit cloudy, but sometime next year is likely. When it does, Stephen Schiff will be showrunner with Rogue One “savior” Tony Gilroy writing and directing multiple episodes.
Many have tried and failed to bring one of the oldest superheroes back to prominence: the Green Hornet. The masked crime-fighter was created in the 1930s and crossed over into radio, comic books, movies, and the 1960s TV series made popular by Bruce Lee as Kato. Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry teamed up for an ill-fated reboot in 2011, but now it’s Universal who will attempt to help us forget all about that one.
Variety reports Universal has teamed up with rights-holders Amasia for The Green Hornet and Kato. The new film will center on Britt Reid, a wealthy newspaper publisher who uses his millions to become a masked vigilante, joined by his kung-fu partner Kato and driving a badass technologically-advanced car the “Black Beauty”. Green Hornet is the grand-nephew of Dan Reid, aka Western hero The Lone Ranger.
Paramount attempted a reboot in 2016 with Gavin O’Connor (The Accountant) at the helm, but nothing ever came of it. Like The Lone Ranger, it’s tough getting The Green Hornet just right, but as proven by the failed movies both characters have had recently, comedy isn’t the way to go. A no-nonsense action flick with top notch fight choreography might be the way. Curious to see how this develops.
Remember that movie Lars and the Real Girl? That was the one where Ryan Gosling fell in love with a dummy and we were supposed to take that shit seriously? Well, Quibi sorta has their own comedic version of that in Dummy, only it features Anna Kendrick getting wild ‘n crazy with her boyfriend’s inflatable sex doll.
The new trailer promises some truly strange stuff, such that I’m not sure if it’s meant to be boundary-pushing, uncomfortable, weird, or all three. The series comes from Cody Heller, who reportedly based the idea on real-life events with her fiance Dan Harmon. Yep, the Community and Rick & Morty dude. Also in the cast are Donal Logue and Meredith Hagner.
SYNOPSIS: An aspiring writer (Anna Kendrick) befriends her boyfriend’s sex doll and the two take on the world together.
Dummy comes to Quibi in bite-sized chunks starting April 20th.
Maybe it’s my early love for Guy Ritchie movies, but there’s always been something about British gangsters that draws me in. The style, the slang, the absolute brutality, it all makes for some very interesting watching. If you’re on board with that then I have something that will fit nicely on you most anticipated list right next to the upcoming series Gangs of London and that thing is Villain. Following a guy named Eddie who went into jail a bad guy and came out just wanting to be left alone and live his life. From what I can tell here Eddie’s old criminal contacts don’t agree with his newfound stance on criminality which leads to Eddie taking out the trash, as it were. This looks like everything I want in my Brit-Gangster movies, check out the trailer below and let us know what you think.
