‘Space Force’ Trailer: Steve Carell Shoots For The Moon In Netflix’s Comedy Series

Space Force! I’m sorry, but every time the phrase come up, I imagine it being said the same way as Spaaaaace Ghooooooost!!!!! It’s just hard to take very seriously, despite the real-life place as the apparent fifth branch of the military. And if you’re going to treat something unseriously and turn it into a TV series, Steve Carell is the guy who should be leading it, as he does for Netflix.

It hasn’t been long since we had the first trailer for Space Force, and already Netflix has dropped another one. Created by Carell and The Office‘s Greg Daniels, the show once again puts Carell as an inept leader nobody has any real confidence in to get the job done, which is putting man back on the moon. The cast includes John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz, Tawny Newsome, Diana Silvers, Lisa Kudrow, Jimmy O. Yang, Noah Emmerich, Alex Sparrow and Don Lake.

SYNOPSIS: A decorated pilot with dreams of running the Air Force, four-star general Mark R. Naird (Steve Carell) is thrown for a loop when he finds himself tapped to lead the newly formed sixth branch of the US Armed Forces: Space Force. Skeptical but dedicated, Mark uproots his family and moves to a remote base in Colorado where he and a colorful team of scientists and “Spacemen” are tasked by the White House with getting American boots on the moon (again) in a hurry and achieving total space dominance.

Space Force blasts off for Netflix on May 29th, and will be joined by a podcast that you can check out here.

Andre Holland Says A ‘High Flying Bird’ Sequel Is In The Works

Quietly one of the best movies of 2019, Steven Soderbergh’s High Flying Bird was ignored during the awards season. Part of the reason is that it was released too early in the year, the other that it was a Netflix film and they already had too many to try and push. But there’s no doubting how good it is, maybe good enough to warrant a sequel.

High Flying Bird star Andre Holland spoke with AI.com and was asked an interesting question, which is how his sports agent character Ray Burke from the movie would handle the current pandemic? In the movie, Ray is hustling to find a way to make his clients and his company money during an NBA lockout. So not that far off from the situation we’re in right now, is it, with professional sports all on hiatus?

“In my imagination, I think Ray would, first of all, want to make sure that his clients are good, right. That everybody’s taken care of financially. Everybody’s fine, you know, families are okay and health wise. Now, once that was done, I think that he would probably be using this as an opportunity to try and further level the playing field. For me so much of what the book is about. And what we wanted the movie to be about is this balance of power, labor and management, who gets to be the one that calls the shots,” Holland said.

Holland then revealed, “And it’s funny you bring that up because the call I was on earlier and then have a thing later today to talk about this very thing. We’re working on a sequel to the film. I haven’t told anybody that… but working on that. So yeah, I think hopefully, once we get this made, we’ll be able, I’ll be able to answer that question with a 90-minute movie.”

Well, damn. Presumably, he’s spoken with Soderbergh about this, and it’s interesting because the director isn’t normally fond of sequels. He hasn’t really done any other than the Ocean’s 11 franchise.  It’s always possible Soderbergh hands the reins over to another filmmaker, but clearly, he and Holland have thought about this and have more story to tell. Color me intrigued to see where they go.

Rumor: Zack Snyder’s ‘Justice League’ Cut Finally To Be Released?

There’s suddenly a lot going on with Zack Snyder, and it doesn’t have much to do with his upcoming movie, Army of the Dead. Nope, it’s exactly where much of the focus has been over the last year when it comes to Snyder, and that’s his cut of Justice League and the time he spent manning the DCEU. A new rumor from Heroic Hollywood says, after all of the rumors and (at least to me) frustrating teases, all of the public campaigns from the director and his fans, the Snyder Cut may actually get released.

First up, Snyder is holding a watch party for his 2013 film, Man of Steel, the official launch of the DCEU. The event will be held on Wednesday, May 20th, and only on Vero, Snyder’s chosen platform. So both of you who use Vero, hit me up if he says anything interesting, will ya? Thanks. I’ve always liked Man of Steel and think it would’ve been a great start to a DC Cinematic Universe if Snyder hadn’t fucked up what came next. With rumors of a new Superman movie out there, the timing on this is very interesting.

Okay, so the big stuff. Heroic Hollywoood (just take our word for it. The video they put out is unwatchable gobbledygook) says the Snyder Cut of Justice League has been shown to Warner Bros. execs and “something is happening” in regards to the film. As we all know by now, Snyder’s infamous cut, which would’ve been much longer and featured Green Lantern, Darkseid, and more, went unfinished when Joss Whedon took over and sorta did his own thing.

While WB is unlikely to actually complete production on Snyder’s movie, because that would require a ton of money and bringing in the cast, some kind of release is possible, maybe on HBO Max which is just getting off the ground. However, that still doesn’t explain how an unfinished movie would be presented to fans. I continue to maintain that Snyder’s script should be turned into an animated movie. That way they can make it as gigantic as he always intended, with no restrictions and no impact on the DCEU which has improved since Snyder left.  Have him come in to direct or consult. Whatever.

We’ll see. I have a hard time taking this rumor seriously but SOMETHING has to bring all this #ReleasetheSnyderCut nonsense to a close.

‘The Batman’: Colin Farrell Says Penguin Only Has A Couple Of ‘Tasty Scenes”

One of the cool things about Batman is that every actor who plays him brings something new to the character. The same goes for his colorful gallery of rogues, which have been played by many people in a variety of different ways. Colin Farrell promises to deliver one of the most intriguing versions of Penguin yet in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Unfortunately, we won’t have a lot of time to see what he can do.

Speaking with GMA News, Farrell says Penguin doesn’t have a huge role in The Batman. Perhaps that’s because Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader also has Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz), Riddler (Paul Dano), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and perhaps other villains (Peter Sarsgaard might secretly be Two-Face) to battle…

“I had only started it and I can’t wait to get back. The creation of it, the aesthetic of the character, has been fun and I really am so excited to get back and explore it. And I haven’t got that much to do. I have a certain amount in the film. I am not all over it by any means. But there are a couple of some tasty scenes I have in it and my creation and I can’t wait to get back. Yeah, I totally feel like it is something that I have not had the opportunity to explore before. It feels original and fun. But I am only at the start of the journey so I can’t wait to get back and really get into it.”

Thankfully, Farrell is exactly right for making the best impression in only a couple of “tasty scenes”. And who knows? If there’s a sequel we might see his Penguin come back for more.

The Batman opens October 1st 2021.

Adam Sandler To Star In Netflix B-Ball Comedy That Sounds Like ‘The Air Up There’

Adam Sandler in UNCUT GEMS

Adam Sandler is venturing back into the world of the NBA. Let’s hope it works out better than it did for his character in Uncut Gems. Variety says Sandler will star in the Netflix comedy Hustle, which has an extremely talented director attached to run point.

Sandler will be working with director Jeremiah Zagar on Hustle, which also has Lebron James on board as a producer. Zagar is best known for the acclaimed 2018 coming-of-age drama We the Animals, making this another chance for Sandler to work in the auteur realm. In fact, the story goes that it was Zagar’s involvement that convinced Sandler to sign on, and that says a lot because the movie’s premise sounds really corny, like the awful 1994 Kevin Bacon comedy The Air Up There.

The plot of Hustle centers on a fired NBA talent scout who discovers an untapped talent abroad and brings him back to the U.S. in hopes that he can be his ticket back into the league. Taylor Materne and Will Fetters wrote the script.

So who knows? The potential is here for Hustle to be more than it sounds, and not just another throwaway Sandler movie for Netflix.

‘Scream’: David Arquette Is Coming Back As Sheriff Dewey In Horror Sequel

The gang is getting back together again for the Scream relaunch. Can the Ghostface be far behind?  According to Deadline, David Arquette will suit up as the dim-witted but lovable Sheriff Dewey Riley in the upcoming Scream film from the directing duo of Radio Silence.

Details on the film are still being kept under wraps, but it seems they are sticking with the usual formula, with a few new added characters. Not only is Arquette coming back, Neve Campbell confirmed she is in talks to return as Sidney Prescott. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick are writing the new script.

Arquette said about the news, “I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my ‘Scream’ family, old and new. ‘Scream’ has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy.”

Scream will begin filming in North Carolina once restrictions have been lifted and the studio gives the okay.

Watch New Horror Shorts Filmed By ‘Shazam’ Director David Sandberg During Quarantine

So how have you spent the two months of lockdown? Yeah, two months. While many of us have logged a few hundred hours of Animal Crossing, Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation, and Shazam director David F. Sandberg has been making movies. Two of them, actually, both horrors, and the latest has just arrived to add some spookiness to your quarantine.

Six weeks ago Sandberg released the three-minute short, Shadowed, billed as a spiritual successor to Lights Out. Sandberg kept it in-house with the casting, too, by having his actress/wife Lotta Losten star.

The newest film released today, titled Not Alone in Here, is six-minutes long and its description comes with a warning: “A woman suspects she’s not alone in her house. Watch loud in the dark if you dare.”

Sandberg is a true master of building tension and creating a chilling atmosphere, and it’s clear he doesn’t need a big budget or a studio to do it. Watch both short horrors below!

‘The Umbrella Academy’ Have A Zoom Dance Party To Announce Season 2 Premiere Date

There’s no escaping the X-Men vibe that comes from Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy. It’s something that has followed the Dark Horse comic around since it was created. But what really separates the two, and is quite clearly evident in this new trailer announcing season 2, is that Umbrella Academy has a totally goofy sense of humor. Or at least the cast does.

The show’s cast get down to the sounds of Debbie Gibson’s “I Think We’re Alone Now” in the new announcement trailer, confirming season 2 will arrive on July 31st.  Since we’re living in a COVID world, they all joined up for a ZOOM dance party so they could recreate the iconic dance number from season 1. I think that sums up just how wacky this show is better than any plot synopsis about superpowers could.

So check it out if you want to see Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castaneda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher and Justin Min show off their moves.

SYNOPSIS: On the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by a billionaire who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. Now, the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their father’s passing and must work together to solve a mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.

‘Killing Eve’ Star Jodie Comer Eyed For Furiosa Role In ‘Mad Max’ Prequel

Over the last week there’s been a lot written about Mad Max: Fury Road, including news that George Miller is definitely moving ahead with a prequel, titled Furiosa. Because that film will feature a younger version of Charlize Theron’s badass heroine, she won’t be leading it. Anya Taylor-Joy had reportedly talked with Miller about the role, but another rumor regarding Killing Eve star Jodie Comer has just gained a bit more traction.

THR says Comer was one of the actresses eyed by Miller for the role of young Furiosa, but that was as of a few months ago. Who knows where the situation stands right now. The rumors of her being a contender do appear to be true, which is good if you’re worried who can fill the sizable shoes left behind by Theron. If Miller is targeting Taylor-Joy and Comer, he’s at least aiming very high.

Comer is best known for her award-winning performances on Killing Eve, but she’s been making big moves in features lately, too. She had a tiny role as Rey’s mom in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and will be seen next opposite Ryan Reynolds in Free Guy. She also has a role in Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel.

‘Da 5 Bloods’ Trailer: Spike Lee’s Netflix Joint Sends Chadwick Boseman To Vietnam

The experiences of black servicemen fighting for a country that doesn’t see them as equal is something Spike Lee has tackled in the past. In 2008 he directed Miracle at St. Anna, which followed African-Americans fighting during WWII. The film was controversial to and one of Lee’s most disappointing critically, but he’s not done speaking on the subject. Only now with Da 5 Bloods he’s moving the action to Vietnam, although the fear and racism the soldiers face hasn’t changed much.

Da 5 Bloods is Spike Lee’s anticipated followup to BlacKkKlansman, the most celebrated movie he’s had in years. He’s back working with that film’s co-writer, Kevin Willmott, and composer Terence Blanchard, in telling a heist story of four Vietnam War vets who return to the country on a rescue mission, and the hope of buried treasure.

The cast is led by Delroy Lindo, Norm Lewis, Clarke Peters, and Isiah Whitlock Jr., along with co-stars Chadwick Boseman, Jonathan Majors, Jean Reno, Paul Walter Hauser, and Melanie Thierry. Lee has kept a close relationship with Netflix since they distributed his series, She’s Gotta Have It.

Da 5 Bloods hits Netflix on June 12th.
