Ray Winstone’s ‘Black Widow’ Role Possibly Revealed

'The Avengers' May Have Referenced Him First

Disney has put Black Widow on hold for now, but there are still revelations to be had about the upcoming Marvel film. According to Twitter site Marvel Studios News, which sounds legit but we have no reason to believe it is, an upcoming Empire Magazine story reveals details on the character played by Ray Winstone. And he’s more than just a figure in Natasha’s past, he’s been referenced in an earlier movie.

The upcoming issue of Empire has Scarlett Johansson on the cover, and features a profile on Black Widow. That said, the issue isn’t available online yet so there’s no way to verify anything. But here’s how it goes: the story apparently reveals Winstone’s character to be named Dreykov. Sound familiar? It’s okay if not, but he’s the guy in charge of the Red Room, the secret Russian facility where young women are brainwashed into assassins.

Here’s the thing, Dreykov has been referenced before. In 2012’s The Avengers, Loki mentions Dreykov while being interrogated by Natasha. She wants to clear the red from her ledger, and he replies “Can you wipe out that much red? Dreykov’s daughter…São Paolo…the hospital fire…Barton told me everything.”

Assuming this is all legit and Winstone is playing Dreykov, it suggests he could be coming to get revenge on Natasha and her family because she, perhaps, destroyed his. Makes sense, and considering this story takes place just prior to Infinity War it would explain why she has such an emphasis on protecting her friends/family from that point on.

‘The Mandalorian’ Adds ‘Aliens’ And ‘Terminator’ Star Michael Biehn

The second season of The Mandalorian is adding a true veteran of the sci-fi genre. Michael Biehn, best known for roles in Terminator, Aliens, and The Abyss, has joined the Star Wars live-action series.

The news comes from Making Star Wars, who say Biehn will play a bounty hunter from the Mandalorian’s past. Is he another Mandalorian himself? Probably not, but one never knows, and we aren’t likely to know until we see Biehn in the show.

Biehn joins a second season that has added Rosario Dawson as fan-favorite character Ahsoka Tano. Pedro Pascal, Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito, Gina Carano, and Bill Burr are expected to return, as well as Baby Yoda, naturally.

The Mandalorian season 2 is expected to hit Disney+ this fall.

‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Moved To August By Warner Bros.

This is the one we’ve been waiting for. With April and May reduced to cinematic ghost towns due to the closure of theaters, the biggest movie left on the horizon was Wonder Woman 1984. Would Warner Bros. move the anticipated superhero sequel as so many other films have been delayed? The answer, finally, is yes, and at least for now we’ll have to wait until later in the summer to see Diana in action.

Warner Bros. has moved Wonder Woman 1984 from its June 5th date to August 14th. This comes as most theaters have announced shutdowns through April, with AMC extending the possible closures into June. WB exec Toby Emmerich says the move is in hope that things will have improved dramatically by summer’s end…

“When we greenlit ‘Wonder Woman 1984,’ it was with every intention to be viewed on the big screen and are excited to announce that Warner Bros. Pictures will be bringing the film to theatres on Aug. 14. We hope the world will be in a safer and healthier place by then.”

However, it’s unclear when this situation will even begin to clear up.  While China is beginning to open up theaters now, the U.S. is behind the curve having waited so long to take action. While most exhibitors were hoping June was the time when business would begin returning to normal, it’s clear WB feels it will be some time after. That they staked out a date at all shows a bit more optimism than Disney, who have kept Black Widow off the schedule entirely.

If the date sticks, Wonder Woman 1984 could be the first big summer blockbuster in what will be a compressed and very light season.

‘The Legion’ Trailer: Roman Warrior Film Stars Mickey Rourke And Bai Ling

The fighting ways of Roman gladiators make for truly harrowing cinematic epics, with 2000’s Gladiator right up there at the top. The upcoming film The Legion hopes to follow in the same footsteps, with a cast that includes Mickey Rourke and Bai Ling.

The Legion is a straight-arrow quest film, similar to 1917 in in a sense, as it follows a Roman soldier who must cross deadly terrain to deliver an important message in a time of war. Lee Partridge leads as the journeying warrior, with Rourke as a one-eyed man he encounters along the way. José Magán makes his directorial debut, and looks to be trying to deliver an epic with a limited budget. Not always easy to pull off, but a film like 2011’s The Eagle, which I still think is somewhat underrated, shows it can be done.

SYNOPSIS: Mickey Rourke and Bai Ling star in this epic tale of courage and heroism in a time of war. During the invasion of Parthia, two Roman legions have been brought to a standstill in the snowy mountains of Armenia, leaving them slowly dying in the freezing cold. The rest of the Roman army is a two weeks’ march away, and the region swarms with Parthian patrols. Their only hope for survival is Noreno, a half-Roman soldier, who is entrusted with the impossible mission of crossing the deadly terrain to seek help for his men and turn the tide of the battle.

The Legion hits theaters and VOD on May 8th.

‘Coffee & Kareem’ Trailer: Ed Helms Plays Cop Partner To A Badass 12-Year-Old

Netflix Action-Comedy Also Stars Taraji P. Henson And Betty Gilpin

Netflix is flipping the script on the buddy cop comedy genre with Coffee & Kareem.  Yes, that’s a pun, and if you chuckled at it then you’re likely the target audience for this new film featuring Ed Helms paired up with young actor Terrence Little Gardenhigh.

Helms plays cop James Coffee, who finds himself on the case with Kareem Manning (Terrence Little Gardenhigh), the 12-year-old son to his girlfriend, played by Taraji P. Henson. First of all, the idea of Helms and Henson as a romantic couple is worth a few laughs already, but throw in some drug dealers and a cast that includes the terrific Betty Gilpin and David Alan Grier, and this could be one sweet cup o’ joe.

Another reason for optimism is director Michael Dowse, best known for comedies Take Me Home Tonight, Goon, and Stuber.

SYNOPSIS: In the raunchy, buddy-cop comedy Coffee & Kareem, twelve-year-old Kareem Manning hires a criminal to scare his mom’s new boyfriend — police officer James Coffee — but it backfires, forcing Coffee and Kareem to team up in order to save themselves from Detroit’s most ruthless drug kingpin.

Coffee & Kareem hits Netflix on April 3rd.

New Photos Released For ‘Peninsula’, The Sort Of Sequel For ‘Train To Busan’

New photos have been released for Peninsula, the new film from Korean director Yeon Sang-ho. Though the film takes place in the same universe as his hit Train to Busan, Peninsula isn’t exactly a sequel. It takes place four years after the event in Train to Busan and in the same universe. However, the film will not contain the same characters or continue the story in any way.

The cast includes Lee Re, Kwon Hae-hyo, Kim Min-jae, Koo Kyo-hwan, and child actress Lee Ye Won. The budget is nearly double the $8.5M cost of the original zombie outbreak film, and Yeon suggests the difference will be noticeable. He tells ScreenDaily…

“The scale of Peninsula can’t compare to Train To Busan, it makes it look like an independent film,” says Yeon. “Train To Busan was a high-concept film shot in narrow spaces whereas Peninsula has a much wider scope of movement.”

Peninsula is set for a summer release in South Korea.

‘Bad Boys For Life’ Hits Digital On March 31st

The best Bad Boys is coming home early. Bad Boys for Life, the biggest movie so far in 2020 with $419M worldwide, will be released digitally on March 31st. That’s a full month earlier than its availability on Bluray and DVD.

The move by Sony is likely a response to the worldwide pandemic which has closed movie theaters and left millions of people in their homes. Following the March 31st digital release, Bad Boys for Life will hit 4K Ultra, Bluray, and DVD on April 21st. The gap between digital and physical releases is rarely so long, if there’s one at all. So this move is likely a strategic one.

Bad Boys for Life returns Will Smith and Martin Lawrence to the action franchise for the first time since 2003. I think everybody’s expectations were low, but for me this was the best story of the three movies by far, even if the action sequences were less impressive. It’s safe to say the series is reborn, and another movie is already in the works.

Bruce Willis Sci-Fi Film ‘Cosmic Sin’ Adds Frank Grillo, Luke Wilson, And Adelaide Kane

The Bruce Willis sci-fi film Cosmic Sin may turn out better than what he’s been doing lately. Despite production being shut down right now, but some key casting was able to take place beforehand.

Deadline says Frank Grillo, Adelaide Kane (The Purge), and Luke Wilson have joined the previously-cast Willis, WWE superstar Lana, Lochlyn Munro, and Brandon Thomas Lee in Cosmic Sin. The film, by writers/directors Corey Large and Edward Drake, follows a race of human warriors and scientists who must save their race from hostile aliens with the power to infect and take over their hosts.

Willis and Grillo recently worked together on the action flick, Reprisal. Hopefully, this will be better than that. Check out images of Willis and Lana in the below Instagram.

‘The Willoughbys’ Trailer: Siblings Send Their Parents On A Killer Vacation In Netflix’s Animated Film

Most kids probably go through a phase when they think they’re better off without their parents. Few of them actually put that notion into deadly practice, however, and it makes for an odd premise for the upcoming animated film, The Willoughbys, which is set to hit Netflix next month.

Featuring the voices of Will Forte, Maya Rudolph, Alessia Cara, Terry Crews, Martin Short, Jane Krakowski, Séan Cullen, and Ricky Gervais, the story follows siblings who set their selfish parents on a dangerous journey they’re unlikely to return from. The film is directed by Kris Pearn, who last worked on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, and based on the popular children’s book by Lois Lowry.

The Willoughbys hits Netflix on April 22nd, and considering how many families will be stuck indoors together for so long I hope it doesn’t give them any ideas.

SYNOPSIS: Convinced they’d be better off raising themselves, the Willoughby children hatch a sneaky plan to send their selfish parents on vacation. The siblings then embark on their own high-flying adventure to find the true meaning of family.

‘The Great’ Trailer: Elle Fanning Rules In Hulu Comedy Series From ‘The Favourite’ Writer

If, when watching the trailer for Hulu series The Great, you get the feeling somebody had watched The Favourite one too many times…well, you’re close. The show actually comes from Tony McNamara, writer of that Oscar-winning comedy, which is why the satirical tone feels so familiar.

The Great is a comedic look at the rise of Catherine the Great, the longest-reigning female ruler in Russian history. She attained this power by arranging a coup against her own husband, so get ready for plenty of palace intrigue to go along with the humor from McNamara, who created and wrote the series. Catherine was also known to have her share of favourites, who she leaned on for companionship and policy.

Elle Fanning stars as Catherine, joined by Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, Bayo Gbadamosi, and Belinda Bromilow. The Great hits Hulu on May 15th.
