A sex comedy with Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron? Um, yeah, sure, I’ll bite. The Oscar-winning actress and star of The Iron Claw lead Netflix’s A Family Affair, reuniting for the first time after Lee Daniels’ The Paperboy in 2012. Remember that one? Yeah, don’t bother. This already looks better.
Directed by Richard LaGravenese (of the under-appreciated Beautiful Creatures), A Family Affair stars Joey King as a young woman with a crappy job the assistant to a narcissistic movie star played by Efron. She’d love to ditch him and move on to something better, but then she learns that her mother, played by Kidman, is involved with him romantically. While this is definitely an awkward situation that should provide easy laughs, there’s concern for the needs of both the daughter and the mother.
Kathy Bates, Liza Koshy, and Shirley MacLaine co-star. LaGravenese directs from a script by Carrie Solomon, who is attached to the Ocean’s prequel with Margot Robbie.
Here’s the synopsis: Work as the assistant to super mega movie star, Chris Cole, a demanding and womanizing narcissist, is beginning to take its toll on Zara. On an impulse she quits her job, only to soon discover that her widowed mother has begun a romance with the famous playboy.
Netflix premieres A Family Affair on June 28th.
