‘Deadpool & Wolverine’: Shawn Levy Says It’s Not ‘Deadpool 3’ But A Different Thing

Marvel is taking a bit of a breather in 2024, and a much needed one. But the one movie they have coming out is a doozy. Deadpool & Wolverine accomplishes two major things that fans have been waiting years for. First, it teams up Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, and finally brings both characters into the MCU. However, fans shouldn’t look at the film as Deadpool 3, according to director Shawn Levy. They should see it as something more.

Levy told ScreenRant during Cinemacon…

“As far as crafting the ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ story, I felt privileged every day because you’re talking about two massive movie stars in their most iconic roles. It also gave me an opportunity. It’s the third ‘Deadpool’ movie, but it’s not ‘Deadpool 3.’ It’s a different thing that’s very much ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ And it’s not trying to copycat anything from the first two movies. They were awesome, but this is a two-hander character adventure.”

None of these comments should be surprising. New studio, new rules, right? There’s a lot more that can be done at Marvel Studios than at 20th Century Fox at the time, and that includes bringing in an all-star cast of familiar superhero faces. A fun rumor has Jennifer Garner returning as Elektra. A real coup would be if they could land Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters on July 26th.
