Remember Soulm8te? Universal Pictures, James Wan, and Blumhouse reteamed for a spinoff of the AI horror M3GAN, which was huge in 2022. Not so much for its sequel, M3GAN 2.0, which totally bombed last year. As such, Universal got squeamish about continuing this franchise and yanked the film from the January 9th release date. No shock, because they hadn’t produced a trailer for it, either.
Well, that’s changed now. The first trailer for Soulm8te has arrived, but it comes with news that suggests Universal has totally lost faith in it. They appear to be trying to quietly dump the film in a way that nobody notices, by skipping a theatrical release entirely. Instead, it will go straight to digital on August 1st. Whomp whomp.
Anyway, Soulm8te is directed and co-written by Kate Dolan, from a story by Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and co-writer Rafael Jordan.
The story follows a grieving man who turns to an AI android companion to help cope with his wife’s death. But in his pursuit of creating the perfect partner capable of projecting emotion, he instead creates an obsessed and dangerous stalker.
Basically, it’s like Fatal Attraction with a deadly robot, which in theory sounds kinda cool. The cast includes Lily Sullivan, David Rysdahl, Claudia Doumit, and Oliver Cooper.
Who knows? Maybe Soulm8te is better than all of this suggests? The trailer makes it look kinda shoddy, but I’ve seen worse.
