I’ve been saying for over a year that Marvel’s Blade movie with Mahershala Ali was never going to happen. Then, in March, a rumor emerged that the project was no longer moving forward, but the sourcing was weak. Now, reliable scooper Jeff Sneider is backing that up, saying the project is “dead”.
Sneider spoke about Blade on The Hot Mic podcast, and says that Blade will no longer get a solo movie. Instead, he’ll be introduced in the team flick Midnight Sons…
“He [Blade] will not be introduced in a solo movie,” Sneider said. “He’ll be introduced in Midnight Sons.”
I said the same thing, but back in March.
The Midnight Sons are Marvel’s team of supernatural heroes. Remember when DC was going to do Justice League Dark? Well, this is the same concept, basically. The team’s lineup generally consists of Blade, Moon Knight, Ghost Riders Johnny Blaze and Dan Ketch, Man-Thing, Morbius, Elsa Bloodstone, Doctor Strange, and more. The team was recently featured in a Marvel video game that was actually really good.
Blade has been so cursed, it’s a wonder the Day Walker himself didn’t try to drive a stake through its heart. First announced to great fanfare at Comic-Con 2019, the film has been plagued by delays, multiple rewrites, directors fleeing for the hills, actors dropping out, and even a writer’s strike. Through it all, Ali has remained aboard, although in recent years his patience has been wearing thin. It’s tough to blame him.
