A ‘ThunderCats’ Animated Movie Has Been Announced, But Is It Adam Wingard’s Movie?

It’s an odd time for any studio to start talking about a ThunderCats movie. One of its ’80s contemporaries, Masters of the Universe, just sank like a chunk of Castle Grayskull at the box office. But Discussing Film reports that a new ThunderCats movie was announced by Warner Bros. Pictures Animation at the Annecy Festival.

This is interesting because Adam Wingard of MonsterVerse, You’re Next, and The Guest fame, was hired to direct a CGI-animated movie in 2021. There haven’t been a ton of updates, but we did know that Wingard and Simon Barrett were working on the script as recently as 2024. Who knows what’s happened in that time?

It’s unclear if this new project is connected to Wingard’s or if it’s something brand new. Nor do we know if it’s being planned as a theatrical release, or something for digital, as with many of the WB Animation movies.

ThunderCats takes place on Third Earth, where humanoids known as the ThunderCats are engaged in seemingly endless battle against the eternal evil known as Mumm-Ra the Ever-Living. The team consists of leader Lion-O, the powerful Panthro, wisened Tygra, the agile Cheetara, Lion-O’s protector Snarf, and the kids Wilykit and Wilykat.

There have been three ThunderCats shows to hit the air. The original series in 1985, a revival in 2011, and the terrible Cartoon Network comedy ThunderCats Roar which lasted only one season. I’m not sure the time is right, but any chance to see Mumm-Ra on the big screen is something to get excited over.
