Robert Duvall, one of the last true titans of the big screen, has died at the age of 95. He passed away in his ranch in Middleburg, VA, on Sunday evening. Born in San Diego on January 5th 1931, Duvall grew up in Annapolis, MD, then served briefly in the U.S. Army before moving to New York where his sixty-year acting career took off with a debut role as Boo Radley in 1962’s To Kill a Mockingbird.
The role that really put Duvall on the map was as Tom Hagen in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather in 1973, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He would reprise the role in the acclaimed sequel, The Godfather Part II.
Another iconic performance by Duvall was in Coppola’s 1979 war classic, Apocalypse Now, for which he received another Oscar nomination.
In 1983, Duvall won the Oscar for Best Actor for Tender Mercies, playing tragic country music singer Mac Sledge. That performance is considered one of the best ever put to film.
Duvall would earn multiple awards and nominations across film and television, including in The Apostle, Lonesome Dove, A Civil Action, and most recently, 2014’s The Judge.
Duvall worked steadily until late in his career, starring in films such as Hustle, Widows, In Dubious Battle, and his final credit, Scott Cooper’s The Pale Blue Eye in 2022.
We offer our condolences to Duvall’s friends and family for their loss.
