Tragic news this morning, as legendary actor Sam Neill has passed away at the age of 78. The Jurassic Park actor had recently won a battle with cancer. The cause of death is unknown. The news was announced by his family on Instagram…
“Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterized his whole life,” the family said in a statement.
“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.”
Born in Northern Ireland but raised in New Zealand, Neill’s career took off in 1977 with a role in Roger Donaldson’s Sleeping Dogs. Prominent roles followed in The Hunt for Red October, Possession, The Piano, Omen III: The Final Conflict, and my personal favorite, Dead Calm.
But Neill will always be remembered for starring as Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. It’s a role he would reprise in Jurassic Park III, and most recently in 2022’s Jurassic Park: Dominion.
Neill has stayed busy in recent years. He worked with Taika Waititi twice, in the beloved adventure film Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and again in a small cameo in Thor: Love and Thunder. A couple of big posthumous releases are on the way. Neill will be seen in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, opening in 2027, and in The Last Resort opposite Daisy Ridley.
I extend my condolences to the friends and family of Sam Neill for their loss.
