Sounds like it’s happening, and that Johnny Depp is coming back to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has always pushed for Depp’s return for the sixth movie, told EW that Depp is open to a return as Jack Sparrow if the script is up to par. Looks as if things are changing over at Disney, and they are ready to move on from some of the controversies of the past.
Depp has been on the outs with Disney and pretty much all of Hollywood since 2018 and the allegations made by his ex, Amber Heard. He has kept busy, but mostly in smaller films such as Minimata, The Professor, and Waiting for the Barbarians. In 2024, Depp directed Modi, a biopic of painter Amedeo Modigliani, starring Riccardo Scamarcio, Stephen Graham, and Al Pacino. Despite the star power, distribution has been tough to come by.
While Depp previously expressed disinterest in working for Disney again, things may have begun to change following his victory in the defamation suit against Heard.
Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is meant to be a reboot, with a script penned by Jeff Nathanson following drafts by Craig Mazin and franchise vet Ted Elliot. Ayo Edbiri has been loosely attached to star in it. Another script reportedly has Margot Robbie linked to it. What this film ultimately turns out to be is anyone’s guess, but it looks like Sparrow is done walking the plank and could be part of the action. What a comeback this would be for Depp if it all pans out.
