A sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie has been in the works for years at Disney, and for all of that time, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has been trying to find a way to bring Johnny Depp back as Jack Sparrow. The actor has been persona non grata for a while, but seems to be making a comeback with Ebenezer, which opens later this month. Now, Depp has revealed why he would take to the high seas again, and for him, it would likely be for the last time.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight (via Variety), Depp interest in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is to send the franchise off on a high note…
“If things are exactly where they need to be with regard to how they are going to top off the ‘Pirates’ franchise… the only involvement I really want to have, truly, is just to send them off on a better note. I will go to work with [Jerry] Bruckheimer tomorrow for anything. Doesn’t matter… if it’s Jerry, I trust him. We have a deep friendship,” Depp said.
The true nature of the next ‘Pirates’ movie is still unclear. Margot Robbie has been loosely attached, possibly as the Disney theme park character Redd, but nothing is confirmed. The most recent update by Puck says that Robbie isn’t sold on the film after “three or four interations” of the screenplay couldn’t convince her. Oscar-nominated 1917 writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns is trying to put together a script that will do the job.
If Depp returns to pass the torch, that might be what’s best for the franchise and for Disney.
