When Blue Beetle was released in 2023, it had an insurmountable uphill climb. Audiences knew the DCEU was dead, and soon to be rebooted under the guidance of James Gunn. The film turned out to be another in a string of duds, earning just $130M worldwide. But fans genuinely liked star Xolo Maridueña, and the film received pretty good reviews. So Gunn made it clear that Maridueña’s Blue Beetle would be one of the few characters to make the leap to the DCU. And now we might have an idea where he’ll show up.
Asked by IMDB about Blue Beetle possibly showing up in future seasons of Peacemaker, Gunn responded with, “Well, you know, I won’t say you’re not in luck.”
Gunn has been excited to talk up Maridueña and for good reason. He’s a young actor on the rise and could be a centerpiece for the DCU for many years to come. Also, he’s got a lot of experience, having starred in Netflix’s Cobra Kai series. He was most recently heard as part of the Smurfs movie cast, and we did an interview with him for that. Pretty cool kid. My hope is that Gunn will also find a spot for Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto, who has done amazing work on that film as well as Charm City Kings. Too much talent to let go to waste.
Coming up for the DCU are Supergirl, Clayface, a mysterious Superman follow-up, and a DC Comics series that Gunn has been teasing.
