The geek Internet is abuzz right now with rumors surrounding James Gunn’s DCU, and the possible casting of Batman. Take this with a grain of salt, of course, because the source is industry scooper John Campea, who is okay at this sort of thing, and backed up by another scooper, MyTimetoShine. Nothing official then, and the chances of this being a trial balloon floated by Gunn and DC Studios to deflect attention from Supergirl‘s failure are pretty damn high.
Anyway, the story goes that Campea heard from multiple sources that an actor had been named to lead The Brave and the Bold, a Batman flick in which he teams with the lunatic Damian Wayne version of Robin, who also happens to be his son. He said the actor was “not a name I would have guessed.” It was later confirmed that this was British actor, Tom Brittney.
Who is Tom Brittney? Well, he’s probably best known here in the U.S. for being a finalist for Gunn’s Superman, only to be beaten out by David Corenswet. He currently stars in the UK series, Grantchester, and will be seen later this year in Fall 2: Deadpoint. Brittney kinda looks like Corenswet, or Richard Madden. A mix of both.
This seems like a disastrous idea. I’m not saying Brittney would be bad in the role, but damn, would it hurt to get someone people actually know? The DCU needs all the good attention it can get, and this move wouldn’t move the needle one bit.
Currently, The Brave and the Bold is set to be directed by Andy Muschietti. There continue to be rumors that Muschietti, whose work on The Flash got panned hard, has already been fired or will eventually be fired. There’s no confirmed release date, either. It likely won’t shoot until 2027 or later, so quite a lot of time for Gunn to make a decision.
