Richard Linklater Casts Zoey Deutch As Jean Seberg As Details On His French New Wave Film Emerge

It’s a busy time for Richard Linklater, having recently released his documentary God Save Texas, and the upcoming release of his crowd-pleasing comedy, Hit Man (reviewed here). But he’s also quietly developing a French New Wave film to be shot in Paris. He’s been teasing it for a while, but it’s become official with the casting of Zoey Deutch as actress Jean Seberg.

The first images of Deuch sporting Seberg’s memorable pixie cut have debuted. While details on the film have been scarce, it’s reportedly titled Nouvelle Vague, or New Wave in French. While it seemed the story would center on the production of Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 French New Wave classic, Breathless, the film that was Seberg’s breakout, casting notices for actors resembling Jean-Pierre Léaud around the time of François Truffaut’s The 400 Blows and for Martin Lassale around the time of Robert Bresson’s Pickpocket suggest a wider exploration of the French New Wave movement.

If the name Jean Seberg sounds familiar, it could be due to Kristen Stewart recently playing the actress in 2019’s Seberg. That drama centered on her battles with the FBI who targeted her and smeared her reputation as part of their COINTELPRO program, leading to her death by suicide in 1979. It’s doubtful that Linklater will go anywhere near this part of her life, however.
