‘RRR’ Director S.S. Rajamouli Says A Sequel With A “Fantastic Idea” Is In The Works

Admittedly, I’m a late-comer to the RRR bandwagon. S.S. Rajamouli’s bombastic Indian epic roared when it opened earlier this year, setting the international box office on fire and winning millions of fans here through Netflix. With accolades now being showered upon it (, including a Golden Globe nomination for Best International Feature (and a spot in my Best of the Year), attention now turns to what comes next.

Speaking with Deadline, Rajamouli says he’s in the earliest stages of development on a sequel, but it took a trip to the U.S. for a good storyline idea to emerge…

“Whenever a film succeeds, as writers, me, my father, my cousin, we sit and we discuss whether it can be taken forward,” Rajamouli said. “We usually have some good ideas because we’re high on the success of the film. The same thing happened with “RRR.” There were some good ideas, but not a compelling one.”

“Then, after coming to the U.S. and seeing the reaction, I was talking about my experiences to my father, and suddenly my cousin came up with an idea,” Rajamouli continued. “I thought, ‘Wow, this is a great idea — this has to be developed into a script!’ So, I asked my father to write a script based on that fantastic idea, and now he’s in the process of developing it. Once it becomes a full script, we’ll look into how to take it forward.”

The only thing Rajamouli would confirm is that the new story would follow the same characters, so look for more wild over-the-top action from stars N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan as they battle the British Raj.
