I feel that I’m like a lot of American moviegoers in that 2022’s incredible RRR was my first introduction to the maximalist style of Indian filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli. Nothing is wrong with that. But I highly recommend you check out Rajamouli’s other work, which takes his signature spectacular style to the max. And top of that list would be the two live-action Baahubali epics, mythical adventures that are some of the biggest movies in the world. And now the franchise expands into animated territory with The Eternal War, a cosmic odyssey captured in gorgeous 3D.
The Eternal War is produced by Rajamouli and directed by Ishan Shukla, best known for working on Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Visions series. Surprisingly, the film has a script by longtime Kevin Smith colleague Scott Mosier, also a co-director on 2018’s The Grinch.
The Eternal War is the first of a two-part story to be released in 2027. A spinoff of the live-action Baahubali films, the story kicks off after Baahubali: The Beginning’s stunning cliffhanger, and will “follow the betrayed and murdered prince Amarendra Baahubali (voiced by Telugu cinema superstar Prabhas in a reprisal of his film role) into the afterlife. H is heart aching for those he left behind, Amarendra Baahubali finds himself at the center of an ancient cosmic war between devas and asuras. As he navigates through the 14 realms of existence, he forges an unlikely alliance, confronts divine forces beyond mortal comprehension, and fights to restore balance to the cosmos. Ramya Krishna reprises her role from the live-action films as well, voicing Sivagami once again.”
Here’s what Rajamouli had to say in a statement: “When Ishan brought us the idea of expanding the Baahubali universe into a stylised animated epic, it clicked instantly. It feels like a seamless, organic extension of the world we built, one that will thrill long‑time fans and invite new audiences in. I am excited to bring these two films to the big screen.”
