HBO’s ambitious plot to launch multiple Game of Thrones spinoffs has been a bit scattershot. While the first one, The Long Night (which was to star Naomi Watts!) crashed and burned, House of the Dragon appears to be on sure ground. And now the third attempt, based on the popular Tales of Dunk and Egg stories, has taken a big step forward into the screenwriter phase.
Variety reports Steve Conrad has come aboard to write and exec-produce Tales of Dunk and Egg. The one-hour show is based on a series of three novellas by George R.R. Martin that follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and a young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg) 90 years prior to the events of the core Game of Thrones series. As you can probably tell by the last name, Aegon proves to be very important as his family line would lead all the way to his granddaughter, the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen, and his great-grandson Jon Snow.
Conrad is mainly known for his upbeat screenplays for films The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Pursuit of Happyness, and The Weatherman.
Multiple Game of Thrones spinoffs are still being developed, and we’ll have to wait and see if they all reach the release stage. House of the Dragon is next and arrives in 2022.
