ABC Really Want New Marvel TV Shows And Hope Kevin Feige Will Let That Happen

This should come as a no-brainer, probably not even worth being reported on as much as it has been (including by me, I suppose), but ABC really wants to stay in the Marvel business. Well no shit. Regardless of the few failures they’ve had, getting seven seasons from Agents of SHIELD was no joke, and since ABC falls under the Disney umbrella, too, a conversation with Kevin Feige makes sense.

ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke revealed at a TCA panel that he has begun chatting with Feige about how they can make a Marvel series happen on the network…

“We love our partners at Marvel and we’re sad to see [‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’] go, it’s been a big part of our history. We’re looking forward to working with Kevin Feige and we’re at the very beginning of conversations with him now about what a Marvel and ABC show might look like. Right now, Marvel’s focus has been on Disney+, as it should be.”

This is all happening in the wake of Feige taking complete creative control over Marvel television and film, which has led to the rapid cancellation of shows that don’t fit with his vision. The shows that do are primarily on Disney+, while others aren’t even considered to be part of the MCU anymore. Wait, does that mean Phil Coulson is still dead? I’m still confused about that.

Burke’s hopes may be fleeting, though. Just because he’s starting to chat up Feige about a Marvel show on ABC doesn’t mean it’s likely to happen. Feige seems committed to keeping Marvel very close to the vest so there are no conflicts with overall plan. It’s possible they work something out for a very low-level character, I suppose, but I wouldn’t even count on that.  [Deadline]

Review: Tiffany Haddish And Rose Byrne Save ‘Like A Boss’ From Needing A Total Makeover

“We are two badass queens, like those bitches who raised Wonder Woman.”

If that line, delivered with swerve by Tiffany Haddish, already gets on your nerves then chances are you’re going to hate Like a Boss. The film, which pairs Haddish up with the equally-funny Rose Byrne as best friends Mia and Mel, owners of a struggling beauty company, is the sort of formulaic, obnoxious buddy comedy that guys have owned for so long we still feel the need to make a big deal of it when women do it. It’s silly, the characters are cartoonish, and any conflicts don’t take more than a few minutes to wrap up. What do you want? It’s January, and only runs for 83 minutes.

The good news is that Like a Boss has a fair share of laughs, thanks to Haddish and Byrne who lead a supremely talented cast who make the most of the thin material they have to work with. The story finds Mia and Mel at odds with corporate snake Claire Luna, played by a gigantor-breasted, orange-haired Salma Hayek, described hilariously as an “angry carrot”. With their company in loads of debt, Mia and Mel agree to let Luna, a cosmetics industry titan, invest in their company and save the day. It comes with a price, however. Luna’s 49% ownership increases to 51% if Mia and Mel’s friendship crumbles, because Luna doesn’t believe friends can be business partners.

As you probably guessed, Luna then does everything in her power to manipulate the friends into hating one another, which sounds like one of those spiteful Katherine Heigl comedies from the 2000s. Y’know, the ones where women try to destroy one another and tear each other down, usually over some guy? But Like a Boss deserves credit for not going too far down that route. While cracks do form in the friendship, as money is wont to cause, it always comes back to what Mia and Mel mean to one another. Love and loyalty are always there in the forefront, even when atrocious lines like this are being spouted every couple of minutes…

“Like a thermometer before you put it up your butt”

As many jokes land as ones that don’t, but you can’t hate on the cast doing their best to make it work. At this point you either dig Haddish’s brash attitude or you don’t. She’s dialed up pretty high on the nasty-meter here, but not quite on a Girls’ Trip level. She gels with Byrne as the outwardly calm, inwardly savage Mel, whose business savvy has her willing to risk all to meet Luna’s ridiculous demands. Hayek’s megalomaniacal act grows tiresome pretty quick; less of her would’ve accomplished much more.

The scene-stealer is Billy Porter as Barrett, Mia and Mel’s flamboyant and talented employee. If you’ve seen the trailer you have to remember his “witness my tragic moment” line, and it’s thankfully not ruined when taken in full context. It’s a lot funnier, actually. Jennifer Coolidge is…well, she’s Jennifer Coolidge. She’s been playing the same loopy character for years and that’s not going to change.  Me being an Ari Graynor superfan I would’ve appreciated seeing more of her, but she’s good in support alongside Natasha Rothwell, Jessica St. Clair, and Karan Soni.

A strong foundation of chemistry is what Like a Boss is built on and keeps it from being in need of a total makeover.

The 2020 Oscars Will Continue The New Host-less Awards Show Model

In it’s most pompous voice Hollywood has declared “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and chosen to continue presenting Hollywood’s highest awards without a host. Is this a big deal? First you’d have to look at what a host does. Well, there’s the opening monologue which sets the tone for the show but after that they pretty much just present the people presenting awards…a bit redundant if you ask me. When you consider the usual show run-time to be near 4 hours any time saved is a bonus. For those that don’t remember, last year’s show started with a big musical number and the rest of the show was run by the presenters. Personally I dug the change, opening with a big musical number is a nice nod to the days of Hollywood past and removing any time making bad jokes and political statements is just fine by me. It seemed that I wasn’t the only one (though the reasons for liking it may vary) the viewership was up by almost 18% from the previous year. It’s worth noting that the 2018 Academy Awards had the lowest ratings in the shows history so the ratings aren’t through the roof but any improvement has to be appreciated.

The 2020 Academy Awards will be live on ABC on February 9th

The drama from Irish filmmaking duo Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn is set to break some hearts this Valentine’s Day, but you can start getting the waterworks going now with this new trailer.

Promising to wring all the tears it can from your stubborn eyes, Ordinary Love stars Neeson and Manville as an ordinary married couple who see their lives upended by a cancer diagnosis.  The film received rave reviews at TIFF for its elegant performance and graceful direction. Nicole Kidman And Melissa McCarthy Team For Hulu Series ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’

There isn’t going to be a third season of HBO’s Big Little Lies (thank goodness, that second one was pretty lame), but it isn’t the last time we’ll see Nicole Kidman in an adaptation of a Liane Moriarty novel. This time, though, it’ll be for Hulu.

Kidman is set to star in a series adaptation of Moriarty’s book, Nine Perfect Strangers. Joining her, and making her return to series TV, is Melissa McCarthy. This will be McCarthy’s first series since her CBS sitcom Mike & Molly. She was a supporting player in Gilmore Girls for a number of years before that. Both Kidman and McCarthy are among Hollywood’s top actresses, so bringing them together on a project like this is a huge father in Hulu’s cap.

Nine Perfect Strangers is set at a wellness resort run by Masha, played by Kidman. McCarthy will play one of the nine city dwellers who come to her to learn a better way of life.

The Big Little Lies reunion continues with co-showrunner David E. Kelley, who led that Emmy-winning drama. He’ll be joined by co-writers John Henry Butterworth (Ford v. Ferrari) and Australian TV veteran Samantha Strauss. [THR]

Cary Fukunaga’s ‘Last Of The Mohicans’ Series Is Headed To HBO Max

HBO Max doesn’t launch until this spring, but already there’s a pretty extensive lineup of original programs vying for your attention. The latest may also be the biggest one yet, as Cary Fukunaga’s The Last of the Mohicans series is coming to the streaming service.

While he’s currently wrapping up post-production on James Bond film No Time to Die, Fukunaga also attached himself to a series based on James Fenimore Cooper’s popular novel, The Last of the Mohicans. Joining Fukunaga as co-writer is Nick Osbourne (Remember Me) with Watchmen‘s Nicole Kassell set to direct.

Set during the French-Indian War, the series is said to focus on the taboo romance between Uncas, a young Mohican, and Cora, the mixed-race daughter of a British colonel. Cooper’s book has been adapted many times, most notably in a popular 1992 film starring Daniel Day-Lewis that changed many of the story details, just as the 1936 movie by George B. Seitz did.  [THR]

DC Readers: Attend A Free Early Screening Of ‘Dolittle’

We’re happy to invite our DC readers to attend a free early screening of Dolittle, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the veterinarian who can communicate with animals.

SYNOPSIS: Robert Downey Jr. electrifies one of literature’s most enduring characters in a vivid reimagining of the classic tale of the man who could talk to animals: Dolittle.

After losing his wife seven years earlier, the eccentric Dr. John Dolittle (Downey), famed doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria’s England, hermits himself away behind the high walls of Dolittle Manor with only his menagerie of exotic animals for company. But when the young queen (Jessie Buckley, Wild Rose) falls gravely ill, a reluctant Dolittle is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure, regaining his wit and courage as he crosses old adversaries and discovers wondrous creatures.

The doctor is joined on his quest by a young, self-appointed apprentice (Dunkirk’s Harry Collett) and a raucous coterie of animal friends, including an anxious gorilla (Oscar® winner Rami Malek), an enthusiastic but bird-brained duck (Oscar® winner Octavia Spencer), a bickering duo of a cynical ostrich (The Big Sick’s Kumail Nanjiani) and an upbeat polar bear (John Cena, Bumblebee) and a headstrong parrot (Oscar® winner Emma Thompson), who serves as Dolittle’s most trusted advisor and confidante. ‘Brahms: The Boy II’ Trailer: The Creepy Doll Is Back To Haunt Katie Holmes

Annabelle and Child’s Play aren’t the only successful creepy doll movies out there. In 2016, STX found themselves with a sleeper hit on their hands with The Boy, a $10M horror from director William Brent Bell (The Devil Inside) that earned more than $60M. Not a huge hit, but enough to dust the doll off and bring it down from the shelf for a sequel.

Brahms: The Boy II features a new cast, this time led by Katie Holmes, whose character encounters the malevolent life-like doll. Ralph Ineson, Christopher Convery, and Owain Yeoman complete the cast, with Bell back to direct and Stacy Menear once again providing the script.

I can see this sequel doing even better than before. The Boy is one of those films that, while its box office was modest, it grew into a cult favorite and I think more people are going to turn out to see what happens next.

SYNOPSIS: Unaware of the terrifying history of Heelshire Mansion, a young family moves into a guest house on the estate where their young son soon makes an unsettling new friend, an eerily life-like doll he calls Brahms.

Brahms: The Boy II will terrorize audiences beginning February 21st.

‘First Cow’ Trailer: A Prized Bovine Takes Center Stage In Kelly Reichardt’s Latest Indie Drama

A filmmaker needs not be as bombastic as Michael Bay or Quentin Tarantino to be divisive. In the case of Kelly Reichardt, her brand of gradual, humanist character studies are just as polarizing. Some find them extremely slow and boring, others see them as subtle and soulful. Your mileage may vary, basically, and that will undoubtedly continue to be true for her next film, First Cow, which has a new trailer courtesy of the indie taste-makers at A24.

Starring John Magaro (Not Fade Away) and Orion Lee, First Cow is another of Reichardt’s films to explore a specific, somewhat unusual relationship, this time between an Oregon cook and a Chinese immigrant in the 1820s Pacific Northwest. The cast includes the late René Auberjonois, Toby Jones, Ewen Bremner, Alia Shawkat, and Certain Women breakout Lily Gladstone.

SYNOPSIS: A loner and cook (John Magaro) has traveled west and joined a group of fur trappers in Oregon Territory, though he only finds connection with a Chinese immigrant (Orion Lee). The men collaborate on a business, although its longevity is reliant upon the participation of a wealthy landowner’s prized milking cow.

First Cow opens on March 6th.

‘Locke & Key’ Trailer: Netflix Finally Unveils Joe Hill’s Long-Awaited Horror Series

Wow, it’s finally here! The journey to the small screen for Netflix’s Lock & Key has been a long and winding one, encompassing a number of creators, networks, stars, and even a shelved pilot episode. While the talent around it has changed, the graphic novel’s author Joe Hill has stayed on board throughout, and finally sees his horror-fantasy series become a reality. Judging by the new trailer, the wait was worth it.

Locke & Key centers on the Locke siblings, who move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts following the mysterious death of their father. Once there, they began discovering powerful keys that lead them to suspect there is more to the demise of their father than suspected.

Netflix couldn’t be a better home for this to land, given the streamer’s success with other genre projects, including those by Hill’s father, Stephen King.  Locke & Key comes from Lost and Bates Motel creator Carlton Cuse, along with Meredith Avril of The Haunting of Hill House. Pretty strong creds there. The cast is led by Jackson Robert Scott, Darby Stanchfield, Griffin Gluck, Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, and Sherri Saum.

SYNOPSIS: After their father is murdered under mysterious circumstances, the three Locke siblings and their mother move into their ancestral home, Keyhouse, which they discover is full of magical keys that may be connected to their father’s death. As the Locke children explore the different keys and their unique powers, a mysterious demon awakens — and will stop at nothing to steal them. From Carlton Cuse (“Lost,” “Bates Motel”) and Meredith Averill (“The Haunting of Hill House”), the series is a coming-of-age mystery about love, loss, and the unshakable bonds that define family.

Locke & Key hits Netflix on February 7th.
