Daniel Craig And Luca Guadagnino Circling A ‘Sgt. Rock’ War Movie At DC Studios

This is one of those rumors that seemed too good to be true, and yet it’s actually a real thing. Daniel Craig and his Queer director Luca Guadagnino are coming to James Gunn’s DC Studios for Sgt. Rock, based on the DC Comics military title. Wow. Guadagnino making a superhero movie? Yes, please.

The rumor first sprang up in September that Guadganino was eyeing a Sgt. Rock movie, but now reports (via Deadline) are spreading that he’s reteaming with Craig and screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes, who already has a script sailing along just fine. Kuritzkes previously wrote Challengers and Queer for Guadagnino, so they’ve got a pretty good thing going.

Sgt. Rock isn’t a superhero, nor does he have any powers. He is a WWII U.S. Army soldier, a crack shot with a gun, and a leader in Easy Company. He first appeared in Joe Kubert and Robert Kanigher’s Our Army at War comic in 1959. This being comic books, Sgt. Frank Rock managed to survive the fighting and find action in modern times alongside heroes including Batman, Superman, the Suicide Squad, and the Creature Commandos. Gee, who REALLY likes those characters? James Gunn does, that’s who.

A Sgt. Rock movie has been attempted many times since the 1980s. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Guy Ritchie, and others have been attached at different points.

No deals are in place, but with a nearly completed script it looks as if Sgt. Rock is becoming a reality. It may even be Guadagnino’s next movie, pushing ahead of his American Psycho remake.

Craig and Guadagnino’s film Queer opens next week on November 27th.
