‘Avengers 5’: Marvel Eyes Shawn Levy To Direct, 60 MCU Characters Possibly Returning

With Deadpool & Wolverine set to be the biggest movie of the summer when it opens next month, Marvel Studios is eyeing its director, Shawn Levy, to helm its next Avengers movie. Deadline reports that Levy is considering the job of directing the film formerly known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty when Jonathan Majors and Destin Daniel Cretton were attached.

Rumors about Levy taking over the job have been swirling for weeks, and the report states that he has been sent the latest script by Michael Waldron. However, Levy hasn’t accepted anything yet as he’s got a lot on his plate with the final season of Stranger Things, press for Deadpool & Wolverine, and even a future Star Wars movie.

The report adds to our understanding of the massive scope of Avengers 5, calling it “one of Marvel’s largest productions to date” with sources saying “more than 60 MCU characters could reprise their roles, including everyone from Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Benedict Cumberbatch to Tom Hiddleston, Simu Liu and Karen Gillian. Unlike the first four films in which there was a core group that consisted of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Hemsworth and Ruffalo, many of the characters in this film would have equal footing, making it more of an ensemble feature instead of a handful of characters leading the team.”

While the villain Kang has been removed from the title, the character is likely to have at least some role in the story. With Majors gone, that means another actor will have to step in or he’ll play a background role in which he’s never seen.

With Levy still on the fence, Marvel will continue speaking to other filmmakers. I wouldn’t expect a decision to be made until they see how Deadpool & Wolverine does at the box office.

Avengers 5 opens in theaters on May 1st 2026.
