Disney has finally settled on the way to keep the Tron brand alive following 2010’s Tron: Legacy, which earned $400M worldwide. It’s funny; back then that amount wasn’t considered big enough to carry on. Anyway, the Tron: Ares film that Jared Leto has been attached to for years now appears to have a director with Disney veteran Joachim Rønning.
According to Deadline, an August start date in Vancouver is being eyed for Tron: Legacy, with Rønning expected to helm. He’s been kicking around Disney for a while now, having directed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, and the upcoming Daisy Ridley film Young Woman and the Sea.
Tron: Ares gets its title from the character Leto had been expected to play in the canceled Tron 3. Disney is obviously excited to be in the Leto business because he’s also got a role in Haunted Mansion.
But let’s be honest here; the Tron films aren’t huge blockbusters. They have a core, niche audience and here’s the thing: Leto is about as niche as it gets. Just look at how his very presence was able to keep people away from Morbius. He’s the only actor in the world who can make everybody hate a Joker portrayal. Disney is taking a big swing here and I’m not sure it’ll pay off.
