I feel pretty confident in saying that no literary property has been directly adapted for the screen (small and big) as many times as Alexander Dumas classic adventure The Three Musketeers. A quick IMDb search brought upwards of 30 directly named adaptations and twice as many indirect (The Three Caballeros, The Three Amigos, etc). We’ve been in a bit of a Musketeer cooling off period as of late, with the 2011 Logan Lerman film failing to wow audiences. Alas, the time has come for the four of them to return (don’t forget about D’artagnan) and to do so on a scale we have yet to see.
Martin Bourboulon directs the epic retelling with a cast including Eva Green, Vincent Cassel, Francois Civil, and Vicky Krieps. The thing I love SO much about this upcoming version is it is a true back to it’s roots retelling. Dumas was French, his story? Perhaps the most French tale of adventure ever told, so it’s only right that it be a French production that finally gives the trio (+ D’Artagnan) their due.
There’s only 2 1/2 minutes of footage to drink in here, but it’s enough. Charm, globe-trotting action, political intrigue, assassination attempts, and Eva Green at her most wonderfully wicked….I honestly can’t see how this can not go well. Yes I’m tempting fate but I think we’re in good hands here.
