While Star Wars is thriving on Disney+, the film side has been in a state of flux for years. Lucasfilm announced there would be a delay before the next project would surface, and they weren’t kidding. The last film was 2019’s divisive The Rise of Skywalker, while other projects that have been talked about from Benioff & Weiss, Rian Johnson, and Patty Jenkins, have gone poof. But now comes word about yet another film that is in the works for 2025, and with two creators attached it could be what we finally end up with.
Deadline reports that Damon Lindelof has been hired to write a new Star Wars film. Not only that, but Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will be at the helm. It’s looking like this might be the movie slated by Lucasfilm for December 2025, but the way these dates keep shuffling who actually knows when it’ll see the light of day.
Of course, there are no details at this early stage, and I wouldn’t count on hearing anything solid for quite a while.
Lindelof is coming off the massive success of HBO’s Watchmen, but he’s also been part of numerous big screen franchises, such as Star Trek and Alien.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is a lesser-known commodity other than her work on Marvel’s Ms. Marvel series. She is an Oscar winner, though, earning the award for Best Documentary Short in 2012 for her film, Saving Face.
So we’ll see what happens here. I won’t hold my breath and neither should you that this will go exactly as planned.
