It’s only been 28 years and one failed attempt at a TV series, but Beverly Hills Cop is back! Netflix’s new Beverly Hills Cop film is moving ahead with Eddie Murphy, of course, but for the longest time, he’s been the only one guaranteed to return. Well, today that changes with two big-time additions, plus a new official title.
Deadline reports that Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have joined the cast of, wait for it, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Not sure how I feel about that title, but oh well. The script is by Aquaman and Gangster Squad writer Will Beall. The plot is unclear, but you’ve got Murphy returning to the role of fast-talking, rule-breaking Detroit cop Axel Foley, so we can assume he’s got a murder to solve on the west coast.
Mark Molloy is still attached to direct after replacing Batgirl and Bad Boys for Life duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah earlier this year. I bet they wish they had this gig back.
Paige has been red hot since her role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, recently starring in Zola and Lena Dunham’s Sharp Stick. Gordon-Levitt made news earlier today for joining Tessa Thompson in the Neill Blomkamp sci-fi flick Ash.
Netflix has yet to announce a Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley release date. And you know what? I do know how I feel about the title. It sucks, like an attempt to add gravitas to a franchise an entire generation might have never heard of. Just stop it. Ever since Logan this is what studios do to make their films seem bigger than they actually are.
