I don’t know what it says about Zoey Deutch, but she’s REALLY good at playing liars, cons, and cheats, and has done so in numerous films and television roles. She gets to do so yet again in Not Okay, a new Hulu satire in which she plays a young aspiring social media influencer who comes up with a dishonest scheme to get more followers.
In Not Okay, Deutch stars as a young woman with zero friends, no prospects, and no followers who fakes a trip to Paris and claims she survived a terrorist attack. Of course, as these things are prone to doing, the lie spirals out of control.
The film is written and directed by Quinn Shepherd, and she’s someone you’ll want to keep an eye on. The Unaccompanied Minors and Midnight Sun actress made her directorial debut with 2017’s Blame, and continues to take control of her career path.
Also in the cast are Dylan O’Brien, Karan Soni, Embeth Davidtz, Nadia Alexander, and Mia Isaac.
Not Okay hits Hulu on July 29th.
Danni Sanders (Zoey Deutch), an aimless aspiring writer with no friends, no romantic prospects and — worst of all — no followers, fakes an Instagram-friendly trip to Paris in the hopes of boosting her social media clout. When a terrifying incident strikes the City of Lights, Danni unwittingly falls into a lie bigger than she ever imagined. She “returns” a hero, even striking up an unlikely friendship with Rowan (Mia Isaac), a school-shooting survivor dedicated to societal change, and scooping up the man of her dreams Colin (Dylan O’Brien). As an influencer and advocate, Danni finally has the life and audience she always wanted. But it’s only a matter of time before the facade cracks, and she learns the hard way that the Internet loves a takedown.
