It’s been clear right from the start that Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is looking to put his stamp on the studio’s film side straight away. We’ve seen various shake-ups all across the board, and that most obviously includes the superhero side at DC Films. And part of those changes could include a Kevin Feige-like position for Joker director Todd Phillips.
The news comes from THR, who say that Zaslav and Phillips have become quite chummy in recent weeks. So much so that Phillips cold take an “adviser” role within DC Films, guiding the future of the DCEU and related projects.
Makes sense in a way. Joker was both a critical, Oscar-winning film and a $1B billion dollar hit. Those are pretty hard to come by. The only thing reportedly stopping Phillips from accepting is that he isn’t a fountain of DC Comics knowledge, the way Feige is at Marvel.
Sounds like a minor hurdle, if you ask me. Phillips could easily surround himself with people who are more into the weeds of comic book lore, while he is likely going to push the boundaries of what the genre can do. And I’m sure if WBD can convince him to stick around for a Joker sequel, they’d like that, too.
