It’s a shame that every time Jean-Pierre Jeunet makes a movie he’s only referred to as the director behind Amelie. Sure, that’s the film he’ll always be known for but his work has been more complete than just that, with other memorable projects including Delicatessen, A Very Long Engagement, The City of Lost Children, and the unfortunate Alien: Resurrection. Well, now he’s back with Bigbug, his first major film in years, and it centers on a most unusual robot uprising.
Set in the idyllic year 2045 where humans have designed A.I. to assist in everyday life, four robots in a residential area decide to take their masters hostage. And as you can see from the trailer, this robot takeover is hardly of the I, Robot variety; it clearly springs forth from the imaginative fanciful mind of…well, the director who gave us Amelie.
Starring Dominique Pinon, Elsa Zylberstein, Isabelle Nanty, Youssef Hajdi, Alban Lenoir, and François Levantal, Bigbug comes to Netflix on February 11th.

In a quiet residential area, four domestic robots suddenly decide to take their masters hostage in their own home. Locked together, a not-quite-so-blended family, an intrusive neighbour and her enterprising sex-robot are now forced to put up with each other in an increasingly hysterical atmosphere! While, outside, the Yonyx, the latest generation of androids, are trying to take over. As the threat draws closer, the humans look elsewhere, get jealous, and rip into each other under the bewildered eyes of their indoor robots.
