Luca Guadagnino must have enjoyed his trek over to HBO for series We Are Who We Are, because despite the mixed reviews he’s ready to take on another show. Deadline reports the Call Me By Your Name director is looking to adapt Evelyn Waugh’s classic novel Brideshead Revisited, and an all-star cast is being eyed to star.
This new version of Brideshead Revisited will be written and directed by Guadagnino for the BBC. Without another word it’s already one of the most anticipated series coming up, but with Andrew Garfield, Ralph Fiennes, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, and Joe Alwyn eyeing roles it goes to an entirely different level.
Originally published in 1945, Brideshead Revisited, The Sacred & Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder follows the loves of the titular protagonist as he returns to Brideshead Castle at the end of WWII and remembers his relationship with the wealthy Flytes family. In particular his relationships with two members of the Flytes, Sebastian and Julia, are paramount in his mind.
The novel was adapted into an acclaimed British series in 1981 starring Jeremy Irons and the great Laurence Olivier. In 2008, Matthew Goode, Hayley Atwell, Ben Whishaw, and Emma Thompson led an award-winning feature film directed by Julian Jarrold.
In short, Brideshead Revisited has a prestigious and rich history of notable adaptations and Guadagnino has big shoes to fill.
