Fifty years after Brian De Palma’s high school horror classic, Carrie is back and facing down the bullies again, this time in the social media age. At San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, the trailer for Mike Flanagan’s Carrie series on Prime Video was released, adapting Stephen King’s first-published novel for the world of streaming.
This is the latest adaptation of King’s novel, following De Palma’s 1976 classic, a TV remake starring Angela Bettis in 2002, and Kimberly Peirce’s 2013 remake starring Chloe Grace Moretz. The less said about the 1999 “sequel” Carrie 2: The Rage, the better.
Summer H. Howell stars as Carrie White, a sheltered, socially awkward teen raised by her deeply religious and controlling mother, Margaret. When Carrie is forced into the public school system after her father’s sudden death, she faces a viral bullying scandal at the same time that her powerful telekinetic abilities are emerging.
We all know the bloody lengths this story goes, but now we get to see it stretched across eight episodes, beginning on October 7th.
Flanagan has built a reputation for his impressive King adaptations including The Life of Chuck, Gerald’s Game, and Doctor Sleep. He also wrote the upcoming DC Universe horror, Clayface, which also arrives in October.
Joining Howell in the cast are Samantha Sloyan, Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Thalia Dudek, Amber Midthunder, and Matthew Lillard.
