Box Office: ‘The Odyssey’ Sails Away With Another $87M, Passes $600M Globally

  1. The Odyssey– $87M/$286.3M

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey sailed to an easy box office win in its second weekend. The mythological blockbuster dropped just 29% and earned another $87M domestically for $286M. It led the charge globally, as well, adding another $128M for an overall total of $639M.

2. Moana– $10.5M/$102.4M

3. Toy Story 5– $10M/$448.5M

Pixar’s Toy Story 5 crossed the $1B mark in its sixth week of release, surpassing The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael to become the biggest hit of the year.

4. Hadestown: The Musical– $9.69M

Some clever strategy on the part of Bleecker Street, releasing the mythology-themed Hadestown: The Musical while audiences are basking in The Odyssey afterglow. It obviously worked; the taping of the Tony and Grammy-winning Broadway musical broke the top 5 with $9.6M.

5. Minions & Monsters– $9.6M/$155.3M

6. The Invite– $2.63M/$19.8M

7. Evil Dead Burn– $2.61M/$29.1M

8. Young Washington– $1.9M/$44.9M

9. Motor City (review)- $1.6M

Alan Ritchson might command the streaming world with Reacher and War Machine, but he’s still an unproven commodity on the big screen. IFC Films released the near dialogue-free action flick Motor City into 1,605 theaters, earning just $1.6M. The film from director Potsy Ponciroli also stars Ben Foster, Shailene Woodley, and Pablo Schreiber. For what it’s worth, I quite enjoyed the film when it gets down to business and lets Ritchson beat people up. It’s currently holding a 64% from critics and just 69% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

10. Obsession– $1.5M/$261.3M

Also…NEON gave 675 theaters to Nicolas Winding Refn’s first movie in a decade, Her Private Hell, and it didn’t do much, earning just $1.5M. Reviews haven’t been good for this one, even following its Cannes world premiere, which may explain why they didn’t bother to screen it here in DC and other large markets. [BoxOfficeMojo]
