- Moana (review)- $43M
This summer has seen multiple studio franchises underperform, and Disney’s live-action Moana is the latest, opening with a shallow $43M domestically. It was tough rowing this week, with multiple family-friendly options cannibalizing the audience, including Toy Story 5 and Minions & Monsters. It’s actually a surprise that Disney kept it on this date so close to a Pixar. Critics didn’t help out, much. Reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are at just 34% from critics, but audiences liked it much better, at 91%. Worldwide, the film has $95M. Do we have to consider this another chapter in the Dwayne Johnson slump, too? Everything he touches turns to crap right now.
2. Minions & Monsters– $20.5M/$108.2M
An unwanted honor is about to befall Universal/Illumination’s Minions & Monsters. After two weeks, the film has $108M domestic and $280M worldwide, setting it on a course to be the lowest-grossing of the Despicable Me franchise.
3. Toy Story 5– $18.5M/$403.7M
4. Evil Dead Burn– $13.7M
The other big release of the week, Evil Dead Burn, the sixth movie in Sam Raimi’s horror franchise and the third since 2013’s reboot. It opened with just $13.7M, about $10M less than 2013’s Evil Dead and 2023’s Evil Dead Rise. So yeah, another established brand that audiences just aren’t feeling right now.
5. Young Washington– $6.4M/$33.1M
6. The Invite– $5.7M/$7.3M
Leaping into the top 10 after two weeks of huge per site averages in limited theaters, A24’s couples comedy The Invite expanded to 1610 locations for $5.7M. Directed by Olivia Wilde, the acclaimed film features her alongside Seth Rogen, Edward Norton, and Penelope Cruz.
7. Obsession– $3.8M/$253.3M
8. Supergirl– $3.5M/$66M
9. Disclosure Day– $3.2M/$111.3M
10. Backrooms– $1.4M/$194.1M
Also…David Wein’s offbeat sex comedy Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass (review) was released into 1,000 theaters by Sony Pictures Classics and earned $953K.
