When you live your life online, is it possible to forge meaningful real-life relationships? That’s the question swirling in writer, director, and star Katarina Zhu’s Bunnylovr, which I remember from last year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it premiered. Utopia plans to release the film into theaters on April 10th.
The multi-talented Zhu stars as Rebecca, a Chinese-American cam girl desperate for a meaningful connection, but struggling to find it. As it grows increasingly tough to stand out in an abundant community of online sex workers, Rebecca navigates a toxic relationship with a client, while attempting to rekindle a relationship with her estranged father.
For her directorial debut, Zhu has gathered an impressive supporting cast that includes Rachel Sennott, Austin Amelio, Perry Yung and Jack Kilmer. Clearly, a lot of people see potential in Bunnylovr and in Zhu as a filmmaker to keep a close eye on.
