Oscar season kicked into high gear last night with the 2026 Critics Choice Awards. My colleagues and I in the Critics Choice Association helped continue an incredible run for One Battle After Another by awarding it Best Picture. Paul Thomas Anderson also took home awards for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. This completes a sweep of all four major critics guilds, including a recent win from the National Society of Film Critics.
In the acting categories, a bit of a surprise as Timothee Chalamet’s ping-pong game helped earn him Best Actor for Marty Supreme. Jessie Buckley took Best Actress for her acclaimed performance in Hamnet. Both are considered major Oscar contenders, and may have become frontrunners ahead of Leonardo DiCaprio and Rose Byrne.
Horror and transformative performances killed it last night, as well, with Jacob Elordi winning Best Supporting Actor for his role as the monster in Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein, while Amy Madigan won Best Supporting Actress for playing the creepy Aunt Lydia in Weapons.
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners led all with a whopping 17 nominations and came away with four victories: Best Ensemble, Best Score, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Young Actor for star Miles Caton.
Global phenomenon Kpop Demon Hunters took the wins for Best Animated Feature and Best Song for “Golden”, a likely precursor to the Oscars. Best Foreign Language Film went to political thriller The Secret Agent.
