In case you didn’t know, today is Godzilla Day in Tokyo, and as part of the celebration, Toho International revealed the logo and title for the upcoming sequel to their smash hit, Godzilla Minus One. The new film by writer/direct/VFX lead Takashi Yamazaki will be titled Godzilla Minus Zero.
Yamazaki is back to write and direct, no shock given the critical and box office success of Godzilla Minus One in 2023. Made on a $15M budget, the film earned a massive $113M globally and was re-released multiple times in theaters, becoming the most successful Japanese Godzilla ever. It even won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
According to THR, production will take place in Norway and New Zealand later this year, suggesting a more global narrative this time around. If all goes to plan, Godzilla Minus Zero could hit theaters late in 2026. Don’t expect Toho to drop a firm date any time soon.

Key to the success of the first movie was its emphasis on making the people of Japan just as interesting as Godzilla. The story took place in the wake of WWII as people were attempting to recover from the devastation. One man, a cowardly fighter pilot in the war, became part of the cleanup effort by finding and deactivating loose mines, only for a giant kaiju to emerge from the water and inflict more damage. It’s up to the people of Japan to come together, set aside their differences, and lead a new war effort to stop Godzilla once and for all.
