Hollywood studios are ready to invest in big-screen comedies again, following The Naked Gun and Freakier Friday‘s successes. Variety reports that Kristen Wiig has joined Jonah Hill for the comedy, Cut Off, which Hill will also co-write and direct.
Originally, Jennifer Lawrence had been attached to Wigg’s role, but that’s no longer happening. In Cut Off, Wiig and Hill play wealthy siblings who are suddenly cut off from any financial support by their parents, meaning they have to face being adults for the first time.
Wiig and Hill have done multiple movies together, including voicing characters in How to Train Your Dragon and Sausage Party.
Hill co-wrote the screenplay with Ezra Woods. The two also teamed up for the upcoming dark comedy Outcome starring Hill and Keanu Reeves.
Wiig has been keeping a low profile of late on the silver screen. Her most recent live-action comedy was 2021’s Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, which many consider a cult classic. Coming up, she has the Netflix adaptation Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie. She’s instead been keeping busy with the Apple TV+ series Palm Royale, earning an Emmy nomination for her performances.
Cut Off will hit theaters on July 17th 2026, placing it in a tough fight against Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey that weekend.
