It’s been a bit longer of a wait for Kogonada’s romance fantasy film A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, but the wait is nearly over. Sony Pictures has debuted the trailer for the anticipated film starring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell as star-crossed lovers on an emotional journey through a series of strange doorways revealing the important moments, past heartbreaks, and romantic mistakes that have shaped them.
The film marks Kogonada’s third feature behind the camera. He debuted in 2017 with a personal favorite of mine, Columbus, starring John Cho and Haley Lu Richardson. That was followed in 2021 with After Yang, which starred Farrell and Jodie Turner-Smith.
Also in the cast are Kevin Kline, Lily Rabe, Turner-Smith, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Billy Magnusson, Sarah Gadon, Hamish Linklater, Jennifer Grant, and Chloe East.
With A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, Kogonada has his highest-profile film yet, penned by The Menu writer Seth Reiss. It’s Robbie’s first big-screen role since the box office craze that was Barbie, and the first for Farrell since The Banshees of Inisherin. He’s been busy doing TV with Sugar and The Penguin.
Here’s the synopsis: What if you could open a doorway and walk through it to re-live a defining moment from your past? Sarah (Robbie) and David (Farrell) are single strangers who meet at a mutual friend’s wedding and soon, through a surprising twist of fate, find themselves on A Big Bold Beautiful Journey – a funny, fantastical, sweeping adventure together where they get to re-live important moments from their respective pasts, illuminating how they got to where they are in the present…and possibly getting a chance to alter their futures.
Sony Pictures releases A Big Bold Beautiful Journey in theaters on September 19th.
