- Sinners– $45M/$122.5M
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners bucked the odds in its second weekend. A major studio vampire movie bested a starry action sequel and a Star Wars re-release, and did it quite easily. The film fell just 6% (!!!) and scored another $45M for a $122M haul after two weeks. That’s the smallest drop ever for an R-rated horror movie and the lowest for a major genre film since Avatar‘s 2% drop in 2009.
2. Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge of the Sith– $25.2M
The Force was strong with the dark side as the 20th anniversary re-release of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith earned a whopping $25.2M. This is far and away better than what Disney got out of last year’s The Phantom Menace re-release which only earned $13M over a month, probably because fans knew they only had a week for this one.
3. The Accountant 2 (review)- $24.4M
After nearly a decade in the works, The Accountant 2 arrived in theaters and scored $24.4M, which is almost identical to what the first movie did in 2016. The Ben Affleck/Jon Bernthal actioner had good reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (78%/92%) but it’s going to be about whether word of mouth leads to a long shelf life. The first movie completed its run with $155M globally, $86M of that domestic.
4. A Minecraft Movie– $22.7M/$379.9M
A Minecraft Movie continues to do well everywhere. The biggest movie of the year has $816M worldwide.
5. Until Dawn– $8M
Sony Pictures’ adaptation of the horror video game Until Dawn opened with a disappointing $8M, which is akin to when video game movies were at their worst years ago. Or like what Borderlands did last year. There were some unique marketing gimmicks attached, as well, including a “Survive Until Dawn” competition in which audiences watched the movie all night long for a chance to win a cash prize. On a personal note, I skipped our local screening because all I saw was the competition and missed that our screening was during it. Oops.
6. The King of Kings– $4M/$54.5M
7. The Amateur– $3.8M/$33.8M
8. Warfare– $2.65M/$21.8M
9. Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii– $2.62M
10. The Legend of Ochi– $1.4M/$1.5M
Also…The Daisy Edgar-Jones/Jacob Elordi/Will Poulter drama On Swift Horses (review) was slow out of the gate with just $480K in 755 theaters for a dismal $635 average.
MUBI released the Chloe Sevigny comedy Magic Farm (review) in just one NY theater (the Metrograph, I believe) and made $19K which isn’t bad. The theater count will remain low for its run so it’ll be interesting to see how this movie does. [BoxOfficeMojo]
